LET’S EXERCISE
By Elaine Wood
Question of the Week: I ’ ve been hearing about abdominal breath-
ing. What is this?
Answer: We call it belly breathing. It’s what we did naturally as
babies but need to re learn. Put one hand on your chest and one below
your navel. Takc a deep slow breath through your nose and let the air
go down till your belly hand rises - not the one on your chest. Then
exhale slowly through your mouth and pull in abdominals as you
gently push your belly down. Do this two or three times. It’s a good
relaxation exercise and helps your lungs and lummy muscles so you
can Keep Moving.

Westbury Square
to become outlet
center?
For years now, local residents
have been wondering if and how
Westbury Square shopping cen-
ter would make a comeback.
Now, it seems, some Westbury
High School students may have
come up with the answer.
After undertaking a major re-
search project, students at the
school’s Distributive Education
Clubs of America (DEC A) chap-
ter are proposing that owners of
Westbury Square reorient the
center as a place for
manufacturer’s outlet stores.
And the owners of the land-
mark shopping center are listen-
ing. ‘They spent a lot of time and
they did a really good job on (the
study),” Richard Pulaski, partner
in WSA, Ltd., told The Texan.
“I’ve read the study once and
we’ll be going over it in detail.”
he added. “We’re going to set up
a meeting with the students and
others involved in the study, to
look at it further.” Pulaski said
the study indicates reorienting
the center as an outlet mall is
feasible.
To assess customers’ attitudes
toward the idea, the DECA club
conducted a large-scale tele-
phone survey of the neighbor-
hood. For five evenings, students
used the telephones at their
school to call 1,200 families.
“Our survey respondents who
had been to Westbury Square
said they really like it and had
good feelings toward the center
15 to 20 years ago when it was a
major attraction,” said Tracy
Jacobsen, a member of the stu-
dent committee. “Most said they
would return if it was converted
to an outlet center and that’s half
the battle - getting the shoppers
back to the center.”
“All our research shows that
Houston’s economy is rebound-
ing and we want Westbury
Square to be a major contribu-
tor,” commented Beth Rivers,
co-chairperson of the student
research committee. “The posi-
tive economic impact on the
neighborhood would add jobs
and a convenient place to shop
for name-brand apparel and
household goods.”
Outlet stores sell product lines
- overruns, past-season mer-
chandise or irregulars - at greatly
reduced prices.
The students also surveyed
existing manufacturer’s outlet
centers across the country to
determine the elements of their
success. “Westbury Square ful-
fills many of the site criteria:
average annual incomes exceed-
ing $35,000 and a population of
978,000 within a 10-mile radius,
close proximity to tourists (five
miles from the Astrodome/As-
tro world) and a high traffic count
less than one mile from the 610
Loop and Highway 90," related
Curtis Johnson, co-chairperson
of the Westbury High commit-
tee.
Joan Bernstein and Susan
Baum, the DECA chapter’s
tcachcr/advisors at Westbury
High School, commended their
students for their hard work on
behalf of the once-thriving shop-
ping center. ‘There aren’t too
many students who would give
up their evenings and vacation
time to work on a project like
this. Hours of phone calls, meet-
ings with store executives, field
trips, survey tabulations and li-
brary research have produced
boxes of data.” The students
prepared their final report over
the Christmas holidays.
Members of the student re-
search committee are Curtis
Johnson, Tracy Jacobsen, Sera-
phia Jones, Bethany Rivers, and
Travis Benson.
The DEC A chapter ’ s work has
received commendations from
the Westbury Civic Club and the
Westbury-Southwest Associa-
tion, Inc.
