THE TEXAN NEWSPAPER
MARCH 4. 1987
Pet Care
BY Don Copeland, DVM
I was asked how far
and how often can my
dog jog? There is a Pet
“Fun Run" coming up
March 15 and with
spring almost here this
was a good question. I
am not sure I have the
answer, hut I will find
out, I told my client.
Most of us including our
pets are not in good
enough shape to just go
out and run. I know we
don’t like to hear the
same old lecture about
getting into shape
slowly. But you really do
need to work up to hard
exercise and so does
your dog.
Greyhounds, whip-
pets and a few other
breeds have been selec-
tively bred for racing for
the last 100 to 200 years.
If you look further back
than that, at least 5000
years, they have been
bred for running long
distances. The hunting
dogs have been bred
also to handle heavy
periods of sustained
running. Some dogs,
however, due to current
life styles or breeding,
shouldn't ever consider
running. They are built
for comfort not for
speed.
The young animal like
the one my client was
asking about still has
growing bones. It could
be damaging to the
growth to run him too
much--but helpful to
allow short work outs.
The older dog might
have arthritis and could
further damage a joint
with forced exercise. He
may want to run with
you because he is loyal,
but it can still be clas-
sified as forced exercise.
An arthritic joint should
not he aggravated The
older dog may have
heart and lung problems
that would cause their
tongue to turn blue/
purple after only short
exercise. This is not a
good sign and jogging is
out. They should be
examined to see what
problems exist and what
can be done.
The over weight dog,
which constitutes so
many of our pets, should
slowly be gotten into
exercise as the weight is
lost. This is a slow
process and will take
several months depend-
ing on the amount of
weight to be lost. So you
see the answer to the
question deals with a lot
of factors, age, breed,
weight.
I forgot the time of
year. Summer in
Houston is a killer on
even the best bred and
trained runner.
You see the question
was a good one. We
need to use good
judgement and make the
run a fun one with many
more in the future to
keep us all in shape.

Memories from
Meyerland
by Barbara Adair
665-7096
Today being Ash
Wednesday makes it a
very special day in the
life of many Christians.
It is a time of special
religious discipline and
personal preparation for
Easter Sunday which is
April 19 this year.
Yesterday, as the
media tells, was Fat
Tuesday or Mardi Gras
with parades, dances,
parties and much merry-
making. Now is the time
for pensive fasting and
extra devotion symbolic
of the 40 days of fasting
in the wilderness.
Welcome to our new
neighbors, Pauline and

C-D. Alsworth who will
soon be occupying the
home at 5219 Imogene.
They are coming to our
area from almost
downtown Houston
where they have all but
forpotten what neigh
bors are except com-
mercial. The Alsworths
have two grown
daughters and a couple
of grandchildren--nearly
grown.
Gone, but not for-
gotten are the relatives
of Alice and Roy Johns
of Bellaire who formerly
lived in section three of
Meyerland.
Back in the days of the
Meyerland Teen Club
and the Gottlieb back to
school parties Douglas
Johns took his little
sister Barbara to join the
crowd. Doug is now
reportedly in Dallas and
Barbara is Houston
Proud as a sophomore
engineer.
In the late 1960s we
(husband, that is) in-
quired of friends as to
the price of a pool table
for himself and our three
sons. Minimum quote
was $5000. Why?
Because you have to add
a room for it he was told.
We requested a bid of
adding a room over our
garage from neighbor-
builder Bill Bradfleld
(Oh, yes, by then we had
a $1000 pool table in the
middle of our den).
Jane and Bill sug-
gested we just buy their
house four doors east of
our custom built dream
home. So we gave up
our cherished contem-
porary corner lot and
home and moved into
their lovely Southern
Colonial in 1969.
The Bradfields moved
to Shiner, Texas where
they still live and Bill is
the John Deere distri-
butor. Their baby, Rob
is now a sophomore in
college. Connie is work-
ing in Austin and Mint!
is married and has her
own business in Shiner-
appropriately called
Miml’s.
Shortly before the
Bradfields left Meyer-
land their next door
neighbor Velma FlUey
moved to Shiner. She
was very into painting
bluebonnets and other
lovely pictures and
honored us with one of
her Texas flower scenes
with bird feeder
included as seen out of
her studio window in
Shiner. This day it is on
the wail to my left in the
"pool room" which is
now mv study.
Velma is the 89 year
young mother of Alice
Johns and Jane Brad
field. She is currently
living in Austin, walks
about a mile a day, and 1
hope she is still using
her artistic talents.
