Phi Theta Kappa
Initiates
New Members
On Tuesday, February 27,
1973 St. Philip’s had on its
campus several new members
Phi Theta Kappa who were
initiated in ceremonies held
at San Antonio College Li-
brary Room 301 at 7:30 p.m.
Membership indicates the initia-
tee, has achieved a Grade Point
Average of at least 3.2 while
carrying a 15 hour or more load
the previous semester, and is
currently enrolled in 15 hours or
more this semester. Psi Kappa
Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is
beginning its second year as a
recognized scholastic fraternity
here at St. Philip’s College.
The spirit and enthusiasm of
its members is the backbone of
this fraternity, and for years to
come will always have a strong
support. Under the sponorship of
Mrs. Margaret Goldau, Phi Kap-
pa Chapter has as its goal the
promotion of scholastic excel-
lence here at St. Philip’s Col-
lege. During initiation cere-
monies which will be held jointly
with Beta Nu Chapter of San
Antonio College, a member of
the faculty will be bestowed
with an honorary membership
of Phi Theta Kappa. This man
has done much over the past
years to have a Chapter organ-
ized on campus. Psi Kappa of
Phi Theta Kappa takes great
pleasure and pride in awarding
Dr. C. W. Norris, Dean Emeri-
tus, an honorary membership
into Psi Kappa Chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa.
Congratulations Dr. Norris!

SPC students on a first come-
first served basis. To insure your

Spring Enrollment. The
spring semester enrollment at
St. Philip’s College reached an
all time high of 4,105 students.
This represents an increase of
479 students compared with the
fall semester. A unique break-
down of student enrollment in-
dicates that there are 36 Indians,
975 Blacks, 17 Orientals, 1,732
Spanish surnames, and 866 An-
glo-Americans.

St. Philip’s College are covered

St. Philip’s Audio-Visual has
the new semester well under
way with much multi-media
maneuvering and manipulating
in progress. In addition to
routines of the past, we are
well under way this semester
in taping television sequences
which will go into a permanent
video library for future use.
Several departments of St.
Philip’s are participating.

Several of the old Audio-Vis-
ual Giants are back this semes-
ter and there have been some
personnel status changes. Juan
Hernandez has left the Student
Veteran’s Program and has be-
come a contract employee of
St. Philip’s Audio-Visual Staff.
We are looking for a Veteran
replacement. If there are cur-
rently enrolled students with
audio-visual experience, and
who are qualified Veterans,
they should see Messrs. Hudi-
b ’rg or Milton Burrell, Juan
Hernandez or Moses Smith in
the Audio-Visual Center, Room
T-102, if they are interested.
Mr. Moses Smith is still run-
ning the Audio-Visual Center
in the evening hours.
Among the Student Assist-
ants, there are two new Tigers;
George Juarez, Audio-Visual
Technician, and Lehman Thomp-
son, Graphic Artist. The new
Audio-Visual Kitten is Oralia
“Mickey” Mena, who was top
student in the class of the Fall
1971 £ udio-Visual Course.
Dr. John B. Murphy, Dean of
the College has recently been
elected to Lutheran General
Hospital Advisory Board made
up of lay people. They are get-
ting ready for a very large ex-
pansion program. Almost $2,000-
000 will be used to add on to the
second floor with a capacity of
60 beds for patients.
St. Philip’s Medical Labora-
tory Technician Program, which
graduated its first two students
in August 1972, has been noti-
fied of both students’ certifica-
tion by the Registry Board of
the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists. David Hernandez
and Diane Kern Davis, both with
Associate of Applied Science de-
grees, August 1972, became
eligible to take the certifying
exam in November. Both now
hold their MLT Certificates in
addition to their Associate de-
grees.
Counselors Luncheon
To Be Held Thursday
Our annual Counselors’ Lunch-
eon will get under way on Thurs-
day, March 1, in the Faculty
Dining Room at 11:30 in the
morning.
This year — 1973 — marks
the 75th (Diamond Jubilee) an-
niversary of the college, and
we are endeavoring to dedicate
our program and activities to
celebrate this occasion. Special
tribute will be paid to the pion-
eers and founders of our insti-
tution.
Chairmen of all departments
are invited to better acquaint
the counseling staff from the
various high schools of course
offerings in their respective
areas.
Clack Resigns
Coaching Position
Clyde A. Clack, St. Philip’s
head basketball coach and phy-
sical education instructor, has
resigned his position to assume
head football coach obligations
at Sam Houston High School.
His resignation is effective
March 1.
Although a native of San
Antonio, Coach Clack earned
his Bachelor of Science degree
from Hampton Institute, Hamp-
ton, Virginia, and is a candidate
for a Master of Arts degree
from Trinity University.
Under Coach Clack’s three-
year direction, St. Philip’s bas-
ektball win-loss record has
steadily improved. According to
one colleague, students and fa-
culty will no doubt miss his
“constant pleasantness and ac-
cessability.”
No replacement has as yet
been announced.
Ms. Davis is employed in
Santa Rosa’s Hematology Sec-
tion of the Clinical Laboratory,
and Hernandez is with Diversi-
fied Biological Services Labora-
tory, a reference lab which, for
example, identifies micro-organ-
isms in difficult hospital cases
which hospital facilities have
been unable to handle and iden-
tify. Both held their jobs prior
to their Certification.
The Medical Laboratory Tech-
nician program which was be-
gun in August 1970 is the only
such program in this part of the
state. The MLT curriculum, an
Associate degree program, does
involve students who may al-
ready have earned a degree in
another area. Dr. E. S. Wynne,
Associate Professor and Direc-
tor of the Program, states that
they now have a total of 19
students, two of whom are doing
“double time” since they do have
their college degrees. In addi-
tion to these two who have their
Bachelor of Arts degrees, sev-
eral of the students have As-
sociate degrees from SAC.

It was a real treat last Wed-,
nesday when Mrs. Barbara Boyd
Smith a native of Ohio state
gave several vocal numbers for
Music Appreciation classes.
Mrs. Smith received the Bache-
lor’s degree at the University
of Illinois and her Master’s de-
gree in voice from Ohio State
University. She auditioned for
the Metropolitan Regional Choir,
which was held at McAllister
Auditorium on Thursday through
Saturday February 8-9.
On her visit to SPC, she sang
three of her selected pieces of
music for the competition; name-
ly, “Dearest Night in the French
language; “I Live for Art and
I Live for Love” an Italian
score; and “Ride on King Jesus”
a Negro Spiritual arranged by
Don Carter.
Mrs. Smith started her career
the latter part of her high
school days. She has done ex-
tensive study and has won num-
erous scholarships and awards
for her unusual singing talent.
Most recently, she has been
named as a recipient to sing
with the Heidelburg Symphony
in Germany for one year. Mrs.
Smith was selected from a list of
38 competitors for this accom-
plishment. She is a Pyramid of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc., a National public service
organization.

to St. Philip’s College. Coach Clack later re-distributed the gifts
to neighborhood children who came round to view St. Philip’s
basketball endeavors.
