The Christmas Season is upon us
In the 105th celebration of the Annual WCTU Christmas Bazaar—Canadians inaugural holi-
day season event—volunteer cooks and servers dished up 400 pieces of delicious homemade
pie until they ran out of dessert. They packed up 113 meals for carry-out customers, made 118
deliveries and prepared 33 meals for Meals on Wheels recipients. Salem Abraham opened the
luncheon last Triday, chronicling the history of the Bazaar and the Womens Christian Temper-
ance Union organizers who started it as a means of raising money to build a library, buy books
and bring literary and moral enlightenment to the community. The newly restored and renovated
Hemphill County Library which is still housed in the WCTU Building is a testament to their great
vision and to their indomitable pioneer spirit. That same spirit is embodied in the hard-working
ladies and gentlemen who bake turkeys and pies and peel onions and potatoes every year, and
who don aprons and deliver meals and wait tables and wash dishes to the delight and consider-
able satiation of eager diners.
