THE CANADIAN RECORD
SCHOOL HOARD CAODIDATE
O&A
1) What is the single most important responsibility of
a school trustee, and how are you uniquely qualified
to fulfill that responsibility?
KvBh The single most important responsibility of a school trustee
is to be a good steward of the public’s trust. The public is relying on
committed individuals to dedicate their time and energy to ensure
that the district continues moving in a positive direction. By build-
ing interpersonal relationships, critical thinking, and a dedication to
professionalism I will serve as a link between the school system and
the public.
I believe the single most important responsibility of a school
trustee is ensuring our students have access to the best education
possible in the most cost-effective and logical manner. A school
board’s main responsibility is to establish goals, develop policies to
obtain those set goals, and then evaluate the results of those policies.
By working as a team with the superintendent and the rest of the
board to make the best decisions for our students, I hope to positively
influence the education of our community’s children. Effective and
efficient instruction/teaching is now even more important with the
current statewide school funding problems and since testing stan-
dards have become more rigorous. I feel that I am qualified in several
ways. I have three children currently attending school here so I have
a genuine interest to want the best for our schools. Having served as
a school board trustee for Tulia ISD prior to moving here, I have pre-
vious experience in many of the aspects of serving on a school board.
I know what duties are required of a school board and feel that I can
meet those responsibilities.
i The single most important responsibility of a school trustee
is to make sure that policies and procedures are being followed at all
times. I feel that I’m qualified since Fve previously served two terms
on the school board (1999 - 2005). I want to make sure that Canadian
ISD continues to be second to none and our students are well pre-
pared to go on to the next level.
CKT: The single most important responsibility of a school
trustee is to ensure the fiscal well-being of the district while comply-
ing with all state laws, policies and mandates. My experience with
the state legislature allowed a firsthand look at the decision-making
process for state budget writers and educational policy. Part of my
responsibilities in working with the A&M System state agencies and
the University was communicating the budgetary needs to lawmak-
ers and in return advising agency heads and university officials. I
believe this experience gives me a unique perspective and ability to
assist the school district with budgetary and policy decisions crucial
to the continued fiscal health of CISD.
2) What are the two most significant issues the next
school board faces, and what position will you take
on these issues if elected? Are there issues the present
board has failed to address? If so, what?
The next board’s focus will remain on the most significant
issue, housing shortages. The current amount of resignations ex-
pected coupled with housing shortages, will mean the district has to
find a way to continue hiring the highest quality teachers and staff
without them having a place to live. Without resolution to this issue,
there will be a snowball effect and the board will face numerous other
pressing issues. My position would be to join the current board mem-
bers in seeking resolutions to this issue as well as others.
IbIbI The challenge of retaining and recruiting the best teachers
and staff is a significant issue as is the current state school finance
uncertainty. Continuing to have competitive salaries for our teachers
and staff is important, but housing issues may continue to be a hin-
drance in the near future. The district has some plans to help allevi-
ate the issue but more may need to be done to ensure that we can at-
tract and keep good educators. The current school funding situation
is also full of questions. Pending lawsuits against the state could po-
tentially affect our school district and its funding. Will we get to keep
more of our tax dollars here or will we lose more money to the state?
The board must remain prepared for either result.
Finding suitable housing for the new teachers who will be
hired and keeping them here until the housing problem improves are
two significant issues the board faces. All issues must be taken on

Having spent the first 8years of my life
here in Canadian, and then being raised in
nearby Perryton, I am aware of Canadian
ISD’s reputation of excellence. Through the
family and friends that were left behind, I
remained in touch with what was happen-
ing in the schools. In 2009, shortly before I
graduated from college my parents, Joe &
Sally Anderson, and brother, Jackson, age
12, I made the move back home. So after a
brief search for the “dream” job, I was excit-
ed when I had the opportunity to accept a job
as an independent petroleum landman in Ca-
nadian and move closer to family. My desire
to serve comes from understanding that Ca-
nadian is a great community, but without a
strong foundation like an outstanding school
system, we could suffer the same fate that
haunts so many rural towns. I am a gradu-
ate of Texas State University with a major in
Agribusiness Management-Horticulture.
The questions on these pages were
written by The Record staff with
input from the public, and were
submitted to each of the four can-
didates running for CISD school
trustee. Their responses are pro-
vided here as a public service of
this newspaper in the interest of
encouraging voter participation
and education. We hope our read-
ers will study them with the same
interest and thought that the can-
didates gave their responses. Early
voting in the May 12 election to
fill two seats on the school board
begins April 30 and ends May 8.
