Q: I am Texas DSHS-certified but not
NREMT-certified. How can I test to be-
come NREMT-certified?
A: If you are already DSHS-certi-
fied and just want to test and become
NREMT-certified, you will need to
find an independent test site and sub-
mit the appropriate paperwork and re-
quirements set by the NREMT. You
can view the requirements for NREMT
at www.nremt.org. Click on EMT &
Candidate News. Then click on Regis-
tration Procedures. Click the appropri-
ate level for your certification. Or you
may call NREMT directly at (614) 888-
4484.
Q: I want to be really prepared for my
NREMT test. Do you have any resources
for National Registry practice exams?
A: DSHS does not have study
guides for any NREMT tests. However,
NREMT has two resources. Neither is
a practice test but may help you get an
idea of what test questions are like. For
$15, you can purchase a self-assess-
ment test for the basic level; a para-
medic-level CD-ROM assessment is
available for $30. Go to
www.nremt.org and click on EMTs &
Candidates, and then click on Candi-
date Services. The items can be found
under "Purchase NREMT Candidate
Items." Or you can call (614) 888-4484
for more information. Your course co-
ordinator may have some ideas for
you as well.
Q: Is it true that NREMT testing is
going to be completely computerized soon?
A: NREMT plans to completely
transition to computer-adaptive testingby January 2007. Instead of a traditional
pencil and paper testing, students will
travel to Pearson VUE testing centers to
take exams on computers at that facili-
ty. The list of Pearson VUE sites in
Texas is not finalized, but watch our
website for a link to the map when it
is released by NREMT. State EMS Di-
rector Terry Bavousett has been work-
ing closely with NREMT to make sure
that Texas is covered. Many other pro-
fessions, including the National Council
on State Boards of Nursing, have made
transition to this type of testing. Texas
uses NREMT for all levels of testing, so
when NREMT goes to computerized
testing, so will Texas. There are 46
states and the U.S. military that cur-
rently use NREMT at multiple levels of
EMS certification.
