Nightfall is Coming -
“I must work the works of
Him who sent Me while it
is day; the night is coming
when no one can work. ”
John 9:4, NKJV
Don Meredith (also
called “Dandy Don”) was
an American football quar-
terback who spent all nine
seasons of his professional
playing career with the
Dallas Cowboys. Follow-
ing his career, Meredith
became a sports commen-
tator for ABC’s Monday
Night Football. His part-
ners were Frank Gifford
and Howard Cosell. His
approach was light-hearted
and folksy, in contrast to
Cosell’s observations and
Giffords’ play-by-play.
He was known for singing
“Turn out the lights, the
party’s over” (a line from
Willie Nelson’s song, “The
Party’s Over”) at the end of
each ball game.
Jesus’ words held a note
of urgency. He knew that
his time on earth was lim-
ited. The coming of the
night speaks of the short-
ness of time Jesus had left
to fulfill his purpose on
earth. Whatever he was to
do or whatever was to be
done, had to be done while
the opportunity presented
itself.
Our time on earth is
limited also. We must live
our lives with the same
sense of urgency as did our
Lord. William Penn wrote,
“I expect to pass through
life but once. If therefore,
there be any kindness I can
show, or any good thing I
can do to any fellow-being,
let me do it now, and not
defer or neglect it, as I shall
not pass this way again.”
Roy L. Laurin captures
the importance of perform-
ing one’s duties with ur-
gency while there is time.
He wrote:
If you have work to do
- do it now.
If you have a witness to
give - give it now.
If you have a soul to win
- win him now.
If you have an obliga-
tion to discharge - dis-
charge it now.
If you have a debt to
pay -pay it now.
If you have a wrong to
right - right it now.
If you have a confession
to make - make it now.
If you have a prepara-
tion to make - make it now.
If you have children to
train - train them now.
Time is passing and you
are passing out of time.
Life is short. Death
is sure. Time is passing.
Nightfall is coming. What
are you waiting for?
A LITTLE HUMOR:
It was the pastor’s 50th
birthday and the con-
gregation decided to give
him a new suit. He was
so touched by the gift
that the following Sun-
day he stood before ev-
eryone and with tears
of gratitude in his eyes
announced, “Today I am
preaching to you in my
birthday suit.”
Woodland Christian Church
Bro. Roy Platt
Well, it’s comin. I just
better expect it when it gets
here... but... I ain’t gonna
like it. It seems the whole
country is falling like a
stack of dominoes and
the momentum is running
down hill with the wind at
their back. One state after
another is loosing chal-
lenge after challenge in the
federal courts and Texas is
one of ‘em. Sooner or later
we’ll just have to accept
the fact that the Gay com-
munity has all the inroads,
and, astonishingly, popular
support (at least enough of
it that is) to define what
morality is for America.
That was made apparent
last month when Michael
Sam, star defensive play-
er for Missouri Southern
University, declared him-
self gay prior to entering
the upcoming NFL draft.
Many other college players
will be exiting the college
ranks and entering the
draft as well, but, because
Michael Sam has “come
out,” he has vaulted to the
front of the adoring press
who can’t get enough of
his story, personality, and
(cough) bravery. Through
this whole episode it is
becoming apparent that
homosexuality is almost...
heroic.
No, I do not wish any
gay person ill will. Gay
people do matter to God.
It’s just that remaining gay
is a clear sign that (truth be
told) God doesn’t matter to
gay people.
Yeah, I know... being
gay is no worse than other
sins... stealing, adultery,
lieing, and so on. But steal-
ing, adultery, lieing, and so
on, has not caught on as the
latest American euphoric
(for no apparent reason).
History bears that Our
Supreme Court is not one
to side with morality.
June 25, 1962, was the
landmark day in which
it was ruled, by the Su-
preme Court, that it was
state coercion for prayers
to be ‘school sponsored.’
Madilyn Murray O’Hare
spear headed that chunk of
complaints on hehalf of her
son who was ‘demeaned’
because he was ‘forced’ to
pray (He has since become
a Christian and she died
a mysterious death some
years ago). I fail to see
much improvement in our
country (educationally,
morally, religiously, or
even economically) since.
January 22, 1973, will
go down as another in-
famous day in the moral
standing (or falling) of our
country. That was when
the Supreme Court ruled,
in Roe-v-Wade, that it was
a woman’s deemed fun-
damental right to receive
an abortion. Since that
day over 50 million abor-
tions have been performed
(something we can all be
proud of... right?).
About this time next
year... 2015... the Su-
preme Court will hear,
deliberate, decide, and
preside, on yet another rul-
ing.. . that being the ques-
tion of same-sex marriage.
I don’t look for a favorable
ruling (in my humble esti-
mation) to decline people
the right of being married
to a person of the same sex.
People object to my opin-
ion when the subject comes
up demanding a response
by asking, “What harm is
being done to you, person-
ally, that you would object
to same sex marriage??”
In my view that is the
wrong question. It’s not
me objecting... it is God
who finds homosexuality
objectionable and I have
chosen to stand on that side
of the line when it comes
to any gay rights issue. I
am not particularly for the
government legislating
morality, but, I am sure not
pleased when it legislates
that all of us must approve
of what God has deemed
as sin.
The tide of a willing
culture to disperse with all
things Christian is surely a
more popular notion than
banning same-sex mar-
riage. God has always
adored a broken, contrite,
and repentant heart and
when God calls for repen-
tance it ain’t ‘cause He’s
mean... it’s because He’s
holy.
Why does Easter fall on different dates each year?
It may seem relatively
natural to many that Easter
should indeed be a set ac-
cepted date for the Chris-
tian celebration of the res-
urrection of Jesus, as well
as the landmark for many
other religious festivals.
So why is it that the date
changes every year? Why
is it so hard to keep track
of when Easter will be
celebrated? In fact, Easter
Sunday can fall anywhere
between March 22nd and
April 25th, which is a span
of 4 weeks difference.
It’s also been noted that
eastern orthodox churches
seem to celebrate Easter on
a different date to western
churches.
In western Christian
beliefs, Easter is celebrated
on the first Sunday that
follows the Paschal Full
Moon date of the year. Es-
sentially, this means that
Easter is always celebrated
on the first Sunday im-
mediately following the
first full moon of spring
(“the vernal equinox”).
However, this thinking
changed when western
churches decided to put a
more formal system into
place for determining the
date of Easter. In actuality,
the date of the Paschal full
moon is not determined
by lunar events but instead
by historical tables. As-
tronomers approximated
the dates of the full moon
in future years and the
Christian church used these
dates to form their calendar
of events. Although it has
been modified slightly over
the years, the 1583 AD
table for determining full
moon dates, and therefore
Christian festival dates,
has remained largely the
same and has now been
permanently established.
As a result of this, the Eas-
ter Holiday is celebrated
anywhere between March
22nd and April 25th each
year. The Paschal Full
Moon date can vary by up
to two days from the actual
full moon date.
Western churches typi-
cally used the Gregorian
calendar to calculate re-
ligious festivals, whereas
Eastern churches used
the Julian calendar which
can account for the divide
in festival dates between
these two hemispheres.
While both churches may
celebrate Easter on the
same day this is a very
rare occurrence and a re-
sult of these two calen-
dars “overlapping” for
this purpose. In both the
Gregorian and Julian cal-
endars Easter Sunday is
not on a fixed date each
year, and is instead based
on a lunar system much
like the Hebrew calendar.
In addition to this, the
Eastern churches also have
one other major difference
to the calculation of the
date of Easter. Whereas
in Western churches the
calculations are based on
the Paschal full moon, in
eastern churches they use
the actual dates of the full
moon. While the fact that
they use actual full moon
dates could mean the cal-
culations are more accurate
than western churches, the
Julian calendar itself is
considered much less ac-
curate than the Gregorian
calendar. This further com-
plicates the whole matter
and further church legisla-
tion in the east has been
implemented to ensure
the festival does not fall
out of line with the vernal
equinox, keeping the holi-
day from being celebrated
before April 3rd. It is also
necessary to ensure Easter
is celebrated after the Jew-
ish Passover holiday, as
the death, burial and resur-
rection of Christ occurred
after this celebration.
