Tenaha falls just short of third straight football
championship appearance *<>»»>■ samMd
Tenaha’s #33 Denzell Williams and #1 T. J. Thomas tackle Falls City’s #2 Justine Twine. It took double
teaming all night to try keeping Justine Twine out of the end zone.
Waco ISD-The Tenaha
Tigers fell just short of ap-
pearing in a third straight
1A Div. II high school
State Championship game,
at the Dallas Cowboy’s
stadium in Arlington. Te-
naha fell to a very tough
Falls City Beaver team
36-34 Friday night in Waco
Texas.
Falls City came into the
game 13-0, only allowing
56 points all year. The
Beaver’s had outscored
their opponents 151-0 in
the playoffs.
Falls City’s Justine
Twine scored the game’s
first touchdown at the nine
minute mark of the first
quarter. The Beavers extra
point was not good and
Falls City went up 6-0.
Tenaha gained their first
lead with 7:26 left in the
opening quarter, when
Chavis Gregory broke free
for a 38 yard touchdown.
Javier Uribe connected on
the Tiger’s extra point and
Tenaha went up 7-6.
Twine once again broke
free for a Beaver touch-
down with 9:53 left in the
half. This time he made a
77 yard score while weav-
ing through traffic. FCHS
now had regained the lead
at 14-7. The Beavers added
the last score of the second
period with no time left on
the clock when Twine went
in from 1 yard out. Falls
City went in, at the midway
point, ahead 21-7.
Tenaha battled back to
get into this game, and
the results were a game
that was as exciting as
a real life Rocky movie
fight. The Tigers stalled
the opening Beaver drive
and forced a field goal
attempt that was rushed
and sailed wide at the 7:09
mark of the third period.
Gregory busted a 36 yard
run to give Tenaha good
field position. JR Hill hit
Keontas Davis for a 19
yard reception to get THS
in the red zone and near a
score. Gregory pounded
the ball in for a touch-
down at the 2:54 minute
mark and Tenaha pulled to
within 21-14, after another
I point conversion.
Tenaha scored again
just seconds later when Se-
nior Brady Tovar covered
a muffed Beaver kickoff
return in the end zone for
another Tiger touchdown
that tied the game at 21
points apiece.
With 1:30 left in the
third period Jacoby Ivy
intercepted a Beaver pass
and returned it 19 yards
to the Falls City 31 yard
line. Chavis Gregory later
scored on a 14 yard run and
THS led 28-21 at the end
of three quarters.
Falls City tied the game
at 28-28 with another long
Justin Twine score with
II minutes remaining in
the game.
The Beavers then cov-
ered a short squib-kick and
regained possession at the
Tiger 35 yard line.
Beaver Senior Dean
Gaskamp weaved through
traffic for a 22 yard score
to give FCHS a 36-28 lead,
just minutes after leaving
the game woozy and hav-
ing his breath knocked out.
The Tigers scored the
final six points of the game
with 2:12 remaining when
DeAndre Thomas came
down with a 26 yard Tiger
touchdown reception. The
Tiger’s two point conver-
sion, which would have
tied the game, failed and
Falls City ultimately held
off the Tigers and won
36-34.
Chavis Gregory led the
rushing for Tenaha with
212 yards on 28 carries.
Tenaha ended their sea-
son at 11 wins and just two
loses. Last year Tenaha
went all the way to the
State championship game
before losing to Munday
high. In 2011 the Tigers
beat Munday high school
for the 2011 1A Division
II State Championship.
Many of this year’s players
played roles on all three of
these great football teams.
Congratulations to the
Tenaha Tigers players and
staff on a great 2013 foot-
ball season and on a great
three year run that Tiger
fans will never forget!
Claudine Howard is Tenaha’s
Citizen of the Year
The Tenaha Business-
men’s Club met on Thurs-
day, December 12, 2013,
for their Christmas lun-
cheon. Members of the
Roarin’ Band from Ti-
gerland entertained with
Christmas music during
lunch.
President, Bro. AG
Odom, thanked the band
and invited them to eat
lunch while the Club had
its end of the year meeting.

retary: Doyce Bailey, and

Club approved the recom-
mendations.
Mrs. Carolyn Hooker
gave an update on the Fes-
tival Along the Tracks. She
said it went beyond all their
expectations. She thanked
everyone who helped and
gave donations. Many
of the Tenaha businesses
really stepped up to make
this a success. She thanked
Claudine Howard who was
credited for bringing the
Tenaha Beautification and
Events Planning Commit-
tee together as none of this
would have been possible
without her.
Superintendent Scott
Tyner reminded everyone
about Holiday Hoops, De-
cember 26-28. This year
will be even larger causing
them to play on Thursday.
He assured everyone our
kids would be ready! He
also cleared up the new
classification for Tenaha
next year - Tenaha ISD
will be 2A because the
small 1A division has been
eliminated.
Mr. Odom then asked
Mr. George Bowers to
present the new Citizen of
the Year award. Mr. Bow-
ers presented the award to
Mrs. Claudine Howard.

naha. She owned a Beauty
