“Seven Things to Know
Before You Go” - .
whereas you do not know
what will happen tomor-
row . . . Instead you ought
to say, 1 If the Lord wills,
we shall live and do this
or that. ’ ”
James 4:14-15, NKJV
The news reporters on
our local TV station, KTRE
Channel 9 (Lufkin-Nacog-
doches, Texas), closes their
morning news program
with a summary of seven
major news items they
reported on during the
program. They use the title
“Seven Things to Know
Before You Go.”
There are seven things
every Christian should
know before they rush off
to work, school, or wher-
ever. Knowing these seven
things will help you to have
a wonderful day.
First, God loves you.
The fact that God loves
us with an unending and
unchanging love is a great
encouragement to us as we
go off for the day. There
is nothing we can do that
would make God love us
any more or less than He
already does (Cf. Jeremiah
31:3).
Second, the Holy Spirit
is with you. That the Holy
Spirit lives within each be-
liever is a truth that is often
forgotten. We sometimes
live our lives as though
He’s not with us. Accord-
ing to 1 Corinthians 6:19,
a Christian’s body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit.
He goes with you wherever
you may go. You are never
alone.
Third, the Bible will
guide you. According to
Psalm 119:105, God’s
Word “is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.” If
I will read and heed God’s
Word, God has promised to
guide me in the direction of
His will for my life.
Fourth, you will be
tempted by the devil
throughout the day. We
are involved in spiritual
warfare. The devil is on
the offensive, seeking to
devour us (1 Peter 5:8)
and will stop at nothing to
defeat us. You can be at-
tacked suddenly and from
many different directions.
Be ready! Stay alert! Trust
Jesus! The battle is His!
Fifth, God answers
prayers. Paul admonishes
us to put on each piece of
our spiritual armor with
prayer (Ephesians 6:18).
Through prayer we can
share our concerns with the
Father and also receive His
help. Prayer works.
Sixth, all things work
together for our good. Ro-
mans 8:28 reminds us that
God will take any and
everything that happens
to us and work it out for
our good. He didn’t say
everything is good. He said
God will work it out for our
good. Trust Him. He will
not fail you.
Seventh, Jesus is com-
ing soon. We don’t know
when Jesus will return.
He has promised to return
(Acts 1:9-11). It could be
today! Look up! Your Re-
demption draws nigh!
The apostle Paul said,
“I know whom I have be- charge!
lieved and am persuaded
that He is able to keep A LITTLE HUMOR: A
what I have committed to m other skunk and her little
Him until that Day.” Go son approached a paper

Woodland Christian Church
Bro. Roy Platt
Being ‘on the outside
looking in’ has never been
the most favored place
to be (in most cases).
It is an expression that
has morphed into the de-
scription of people who
want to be included in
a situation that has now
excluded them (for what-
ever reason, as in—loos-
ing one’s job. ie. me in
2002). And, it’s not fun
when you are the kid that
is being punished and
have to take a time out
in the corner while being
a spectator to something
that was fun for every-
one else (me in the 2nd
grade—I didn’t realize
that punching Susie in the
nose for kissing me was a
sin—I thought it was self
defense).
The biblical story of
Ruth and Naomi is a story
of being on the outside
looking in and then, sub-
sequently, staying in.
Naomi was married
to Eli and became the
mother of two sons (all
Israelite)who also mar-
ried two women (both
Moabites)—a happy and
balanced family (3men
and 3 women). Soon all
3 men die. Naomi later
tells her two young wid-
owed daughter-in-laws
to leave her and make
new lives for themselves
elsewhere because there
was no future with her,
the widowed mother-
in-law. One daughter-
in-law, Orpah, tearfully
takes Naomi’s request
and leaves while the sec-
ond daughter-in-law just
as tearfully ‘clings’ to
Naomi and will not leave
under any circumstance.
Naomi makes that fa-
mous quote that is said at
every wedding, “Where
you go I will go, and
where you stay I will
stay. Your people will be
my people and your God
my God. Where you die
I will die, and there I will
be buried. May the Lord
deal with me, be it ever
so severely, if anything
but death separates you
and me.” (Strange how
what is said between in-
laws, women at that, is
used to wed a man and
wife). Ruth’s dedication
to her aged mother-in-law
lands her in Israel and ul-
timately into the arms of
a man named Boaz who
later marries her with the
subsequent firstborn of
their union maintaining
the blood line of the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Yep, some foreigner
(Ruth) got in there. Ruth
would never dream of
being on the outside from
where she was with her
Jewish mother in law.
Ruth, coming from Moab,
was all to familiar with
the child sacrificing, sex
worshipping, war like,
culture of Moab—it cer-
tainly was not family
friendly. Israel was quite
different in its approach to
life and living—both now
and hereafter.
Now jump to the afar
coming of the Christmas
Wisemen with their gifts.
They were not Jewish.
They were not what we
would call ‘Bible’ people.
They did not live in the
Holy Land. We don’t
know how many wise-
men there were, nor, their
names. They are more
aligned with cults and oc-
cults and astrology more
than anything resembling
Genesis to Revelation.
Yet, and still, they were
included to participate
with what they knew, and
being lead by an astro-
nomical phenomena (the
Bethlehem star), trav-
eled thousands of miles
and worshipped the child
Jesus.
The events of that first
Christmas is a story of
those on the outside (the
poor and rejected and far
off foreigner) who were
included opposite the ‘in-
siders’ (the rich, and the
politically correct).
Strange: They (the
ones on the outside) trav-
eled thousands of miles,
or, dinged to in-laws (I’m
not kiddin’), to be a part
of something that oth-
ers (those on the inside)
wouldn’t even cross the
street for.
Christmas is not just
about the baby Jesus ‘be-
ing borned’ but about you
choosing to be counted
‘in’ or ‘out’?
