Congratulations Onalaska 2011 graduates!
School bells ring again for the rest of you on Aug. 22
^'-'Congratulations to all
1 2011 graduates. This
chapter in your lives
is complete and the future is
full of choices. Enjoy this ac-
complishment.
I’ve met some of these young
people and they are amazing.
They are bright, respectful
and have plans for their future.
Fifty-seven students graduated
from Onalaska High School
this semester; the largest grad-
uating class to date.
For all other OISD students,
enjoy your summer and be
safe. Aug. 22 is the first day of
school.
Fun in the Sun Summer
Kickoff is scheduled from
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at
Lakeside RV. The activity will
benefit the Polk County Retail
Study under way by the Polk
County Economicandl ndustrial
Development Corporation and
the Livingston-Polk County
Chamber of Commerce. A live
radio broadcast, fish fry, bever-
ages, entertainment, boat show
and rides, a tmck display and
lots of children’s activities will
take place throughout the day.
Look for the white tent and
join in the fun. The completed
retail study will be used to pro-
vide jobs by bringing in new
businesses to Polk County.
The Onalaska Methodist
Church annual fish fry was a
success Saturday. The cookers
toiled in the heat so residents
could enjoy the meal in the fel-
lowship hall.
The funds raised will con-
tinue activities and missions at
the church.
Along with the many sum-
mer activities around the lake
now, don’t forget the fireworks
on the lake July 4.
The City of Onalaska is the
collection site for donations
for the fireworks display next
month. The city doesn’t fund
the show; it is provided each
year by donations from busi-
nesses, groups and individuals.
It is a gift and a community
celebration enjoyed by genera-
tions. For more information, or
to make a donation, call 936-
646-5376.
Have you noticed the cute
summer outfits in the windows
of the Kids Free Clothing
Exchange? This jewel of a re-
source is for children in need
of clothing and other items.
Outgrown clothing can also be
exchanged for those growing
kids in your household. Kids
Free Clothing Exchange is at
the comer of FM 3186 and
Hwy. 190 in the old First State
Bank building.
There are now two struc-
tures on Onalaska Loop at
the future site of the Onalaska
Park and Town Center. Texas
Parks Wildlife Department has
approved grant funds for a trail
around the park.
The trail will be slightly
more than a mile in the park.
The grant approval now ad-
vances to the funding commit-
tee and hopefully by late sum-
mer funds will be in hand and
work will begin.
The park’s infrastructure
for utilities are ongoing. The
goals for the park, city and
sports complex take time, and
donations. Subdivisions, orga-
nizations and individuals may
sponsor park equipment or
benches at the site by contact-
ing Roy Newport at 936-646-
5376.
Is your church planning
Bible School or other activities
this summer? Share the infor-
mation with the community by
calling 936-327-4357.
The kids are out of school
and we need to watch for them
especially around pools, parks
and neighborhoods. Sometimes
kids are in their own orbit and
not always paying attention to
their surroundings.

LEGGETT
From Page 3B
spired her to continue into the
medical field as a profession,
she gave words of inspiration
to her class - never give up on
your dreams.
While several wiped their
eyes at her words, Shavanna
was assisted from the stage,
and returned to her honored
place as a graduating senior,
before Alex Diosdado took the
podium as the Valedictorian to
inspire his class.
Recapping many of their
memories, Alex recounted
anecdotes of their teachers,
as well as events from their
high school that meant a lot
to them, including nearly los-
ing one classmate and losing
one classmate to the dangers
of driving, and how the class
came together as a whole to
make it through these situa-
tions. Inspiring his class to
move forward, he too encour-
aged his classmates to never
give up on their dreams.
The guest speaker was no
exception to theme of follow-
ing your dreams. Jana Lowe
humorously encouraged the
graduating class to make a fu-
ture worth living, she ended
with her catch phrase as it was
up to them to fix “it,” whatever
the “it” might be with - “yes,
you, yes, now.”
As a special moment, Zack
Johnson returned to the stage to
dedicate an honor to Shavanna
Barlow for accomplishing
what was once considered the
impossible. Many eyes were
wiped, men, women, boys
and girls, as they listened to
the words of the song, “The
Impossible” by Joe Nichols.
The tears kept falling as
Kelcee Mitchell presented
Leggett ISD with a gift from
the class, a treated wooden
bench made by Zack Johnson,
to be enjoyed by all who wish
to use it.
