Labor Day (and football) already upon us
C
| an you believe
Labor Day week-
'end is upon us?
The year of 2013 is three-
fourths gone. Where does
time go?
The first high school foot-
ball game will occur this
Friday night. Aug. 30 at
the I.ion’s Stadium pit-
ting 5A powerhouse The
Woodlands-College Park
against a young and gritty
4A Livingston football
team. Let’s get out and
support our young people.
Students will be on the foot-
ball team, the cheerleaders,
the high school band and the
drill team.
Coach Randy Rowe ex-
plained to the Livingston
Rotary Club that he be-
lieved in playing against
the best so that the team
would be ready for district,
lie explained the principles
of the football program to
grow men ol integrity and
character; gentlemen. Their
slogan for this year is "I .ion
lough.” It is an acronym ex-
pressing many guiding prin-
ciples. He had another coach
with him. Hen Lewis who
was an outstanding foot-
ball player and student at
Livingston High School. He
graduated from Texas A&M.
Polk County
Living
Also with Coach Rowe were
two students and football
players Xavier Hutchinson
and Parker Ogletree. They
are two of the outstanding
members of the Livingston
Lion football team.
I believe that it is wonder-
ful that Coach Rowe and
his staff try to impart lead-
ership. integrity, strength,
humility and a positive at-
titude—all the marks of true
gentleman. God is good to
us. It reminds me of what
God said to Joshua, “Be
strong and take courage, for
I will be with you "
Joyce and I attended
the new Polk County
Commerce/ College Center
Saturday. We saw the Ogden
Country Jubilee. The Center
holds 1,400 people and
was 90 percent filled. It is
a beautiful new facility for
Polk County. We waited
with eager anticipation for
the completing of this facil-
ity and weren't disappoint-
ed. In fact, we are thrilled
about the possibilities and
opportunities it will give our
community.
I had a phone call from
a lady named Jean Weems,
a long-time resident of
Livingston who responded
to Willouise Hawkins 95th
birthday.
She said that she and her
husband owned some rental
property and were having
trouble with icemakers.
They traveled to Lufkin to
find an answer. The busi-
nessman told them, “Why
are you coming to Lufkin?
You have the best one to
work on ice machines in
Livingston, Otto Hawkins.”
They returned to Livingston,
went to Otto’s Hardware
and sure enough, he had
the parts they needed. Jean
Weems, who works on
the Polk County Mission
Center and she told me of
two donations that recently
came in helping to feed the
hungry. She said. "We have
a lot of good people in Polk
County.” We do have a lot
of good and generous people
who live in our community.
It is good to see the
churches praying over the
backpacks of school chil-
dren. The churches have
been busy raising funds to
pay for schooi!(supplies.
provide clothing and the like
to those who have little. It
warms one’s heart to see the
generosity of so many who
genuinely care.
I will be teaching a new
class on The Sermons of
John Wesley, which is the
foundation of the doctrine
of the United Methodist
Church. Joyce is helping >
me with this and we both
are studying and doing re-
search. I taught this class
on Wesley’s Sermons in
Alvin and the people were
surprised by the depth and
meaning of his teachings.
Wesley and his brother,
Charles, wrote over 6,00()
hymns, which are used by
many different churches.
Dr. Billy Graham on several
occasions recommended
the hymns of the Wesleys.
Their hymns teach good,
sound doctrine. We will
meet for seven weeks on
Monday at 6 p.m. The class
will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. at the First United
Methodist Church. There
will be no homework. We
are hoping to reach those
who are seeking more of
God. We invite you to join
us. It is all about the gifts of
(iod and the grace of God.
