The 1908 campaign in Polk
county has opened, there being
some announcements in this is-
sue of the Enterprise. We hope
and believe that the coming cam-
paign will be a friendly contest
for the various offices, one that
will result in the choice of the
democracy in every instance.
The Enterprise will not champion
or oppose the cause of any candi-
date for county or precinct office,
because we consider all will be
our friends and neighbors, and
•when the nominees are chosen
we will be in the open in then-
favor for a triumph in the goner
al election.
While the Bailey afd anti-Bai
ley partisans a re criminating and
re criminating each other Tom
Campbell keeps within the
straight and narrow path of his
own official duties. His ideas of
governmental affairs are an open
book, for he promulgates them
without the tinge of personali-
ties, thus letting the unbiased
citizenship of the state judge
them from a logical rather than
a prejudicial standpoint. Tom
Campbell is proving himself a
statesman of the first magnitude
and the unterrified democracy of
Texas may have greater rewards
yet to be bestowed upon him in
the future.

a Christmas tree be gotten up

a Christmas tree regardless of
the hard times.____
The merchants of Livingston
are doing a better business than
usual since the panic and those
who are advertising in the En-
terprise have had a marked in-
crease in sales. The Enterprise
goes to the homes of the people
and if merchants have the goods
to offer to the people they should
let them know it.
The favorite son idea for demo-
cratic presidodtial candidates has
about subsided since the modest
statement* of the Nebraska
Statesman was was made and
there now seems to be a rush for
the Bryan bandwagon.
The old adage “a friend in need
is a friend in deed” will sound
mighty nice if the present panic
fails to pass over.

loyal members of the Texas Five

LIVINGSTON, TEXAS,
way of saying that a question
is never settled till it is settled
right. True it is not always set-
tled even when it is settled
right, but one thing sure, it is
never settled unless it is set-
tled that way. Those in the
wrong can and may give at
any point; those in the right
cannot and will not give in any
where. Their cause is not their
own, and the time when they
may lay their armor down is not
of their own election. Not so
with those engaged in a struggle
for that which they and all oth-
ers know to be wrong. They may
honorably and conscientiously
quit their cause at any stage of
the game. And this is why the
right may sometimes lose a bat-
tle but never a war. The con-
flict for that which is right must
and will go on while there is one
single honest man or woman on
the earth. _____
