KERENS-WelUt hap-
pened again! I walked
into the Double D Steak
House Bar and Grill the
other day shivering as has
become my habit of late.
I don’t know what the
outside thermometers read
but my body temperature
was well below freezing.
As I made my way toward
to back of the main dining
room to find a warm spot,
who do I see but this friend
in a T-shirt enjoying his
vittles and smiling broadly.
Yep, it was Bob Carroll.
He looked at me in my
bulky coat, gloves and a
fur lined cap and started
laughing. I guess I did look
like I had just driven a dog
sled in from the Arctic but
you do what you “gotta”
do! I grabbed a table
nearby and slowly started
slipping off my winter gear.
It was a week day and I
wondered what he was
doing taking a lunch break
in Kerens. He usually
works up the way a bit.
What he told me I
couldn’t believe but I en-
joyed the story.
He and his lovely wife
Pam run some Longhorn
cattle and other critters in
their pastures and they also
have a herd of GOATS!
Man, I haven’t seen goats
around these parts for
years, but maybe I just
don’t pay that much atten-
tion driving our beautiful
roadways around Big K.
Bob said one of their
mama goats just had four
offspring but she did not
want to feed them. She
ran off to one side of the
pen and grass area and left
the freshly born young
ones to fend for them-
selves, except they
couldn’t. They were too
young. So Bob took over
the mother goat’s role and
started feeding the hungry
young ones with bottled
milk. He had to get up
several times in the cold,
cold night to do the job, but
he did and the young ones
lived.
I got a kick out of hear-
ing him tell how you have
to hold them and get them
used to taking milk out of
the bottle. Man, what a
mom he would make,
though he looks more like
an award-winning line-
backer in the NFL! He
had to take a day of vaca-
tion to do the feeding but
it was paying off, he said.
Well done, Bob. With
your booming voice you
not only play Big Tex and
act as Santa Claus, which
we have written about be-
fore, but you can be the
mama goat as well! Now,
that’s talent with a kind
heart, I would say!
MY GOAT STORY
One reason I enjoyed
this saga was because of a
goat I had as a pet for sev-
eral years when I was
growing up in Kerens. My
mom and dad had run into
Corsicana on a shopping
trip one day and left me at
home playing with aneigh-
bor buddy. We were
about 13 or so at the time.

Kerens folks take good care of their goats
front yard, a farmer in a
pickup with side boards
drove by, saw us and
stopped out front. We
could see that he had two
goats in his pickup bed and
he soon shouted at us:
“Would you boys like a
goat?” Would we like a
worked. I can’t tell you
how much fun we had on
Saturdays, walking
through the crowds down-
town with the goats follow-
ing us! People would just
look, stare and shake their
heads unbelievingly.
And they made great
goat? Man, we had al-
ways dreamed of that, or
so it seemed, and now we
could! So we took his two
goats. And when mom
and dad returned home,
they found our family had
grown. The goat was in
our barn out back. Well,
they asked what that was
all about but soon said
“OK”, he could stay.
The next day my buddy
came over and told me that
he heard if we put a rope
on them and led them
around for a day or so,
they would follow us like
a dog. We did and it
playmates for all our bud-
dies. Mine even “joined”
the Kerens Bobcats foot-
ball cheering squad one
season. We were playing

a town by the name of
“Star” one Friday night
and there my goat was
marching with the cheer-
leaders at half-time. He
had a sign on him that read,
“We are going to whip
Star’s Goat!” And we did
and the crowd got a kick
out of the show.
There are many more
stories I remember but we
will save them for a later
day. Like, one day I let
him in the house with me
and he saw his reflection
in a mirror that was
hooked to a makeup table.
Well, he saw that strange
goat in our house and im-
mediately ran and butted it!
The mirror didn’t break,
so my goat backed up to
run at it again. Thank
goodness I caught him be-
fore he butted it again! So,
Bob and Pam, enjoy your
new family members and
bring them downtown
soon!
