C. O McKinney, superintendent
of the Reagan County school sys-
tem. and Ben Featherston. princi-
pal of the high school, were among
the school officials of the newly
created District 7-A attending a
meeting held recently to Alpine for
the purpose of drawing up the 1958
football schedule
District 7-A, to become effective
with the fall term of 1956 for a two
year period, was formed last
month when high school Inter-
schola.dtc league districts and en-
rollment requirements were re-
vised It will Include Big Lake Ira-
an. Marfa. Fabens and Sanderson,
all members of the present District
5-A and also Alpine to make a six-
team loop
The completed district schedule,
calling for five conference games,
provides Big Lake with only one
home game. Local school officials
state that a revision may be made
in which the Owls will have two
home games Work Is now under-
way to schedule five non-confer-
ence games for the Owls.
A new Interscholastic league
ruling calls for all spring Inter-
scholastic meets, both athletic and
literary, to Include the same
schools as those to any designated
district.
For the first time to its history.
Reagan County Is to have Its own
auditor H. L, Puckett, retired
county official, has been named to
serve in that capacity, his appotnt-
for the I menl being made by District Judge
mber a C E Patterson of the 83rd Judicial
,rs alao District, effective Nov 15
on to a Although
Reagan County has
been entitled to have Its own audi-
tor for several years, the decision
to have such an office had been
left to the action of the county
commissioners’ court But, accord-
ing to a provision enacted by the
54th Legislature. It has become
mandatory that all counties with a
population of 35.000 or with an ad
valorem tax valuation amounting
to as much as $15,000,000 have an
auditor While the number of Rea-
gan County’s inhabitants falls
short of the population require-
ment. the tax valuation far ex-
ceeds the valuation figure required.
Reagan County’s 1955 ad valorem
tax valuation totaled $27,398,000
Mr Puckett retired from public
office Jan 1 of this year after
serving 26 years as county and dis-
trict clerk. He has been a resident
of Big Lake since 1916, coming
here at that time as station agent
for the Orient Railway Co He con-
tinued with the same work for the
Santa Fe when that company pur-
chased the Orient holdings, and
retired from Its employ to 1928
