Gramm to feds: Hire new
border patrol agents now
Washington—U.S. Sen. Phil
Gramm today urged the commis-
sioner of the Immigration and
Naturalization Service (INS) to
comply with legislation passed last
year in Congress that provides S45
million to the U.S. Border Patrol to
hire 600 new agents and other
personnel.
The senator said the funds were
made available to congress in
October of last year and that the
need for more Border Patrol agents
along the Tcxas-Mexico border has
increased in past months.
In a letter to INS Commissioner
Doris Meissner urging immediate
action, Gramm noted that "the new
manpower will help us work toward
our national goal of halting illegal
immigration and serve to buttress
local law enforcement activities at
Texas border crossings from
Brownsville to El Paso.
Gramm said the Congress pro-
vided $45 million last year to fund
600 new Border Patrol agents and
other personnel despite a budget
request from the Clinton Adminis-
tration that sought a reduction of 93
agcnLs in Fiscal Year 1994.
The senator is a member of the
Senate Commcrcc-Justicc-Siatc
Appropriations subcommittee that
approved the funding increase.
Last year Congress prioritized
additional funding for the Border
Patrol, and I want to make certain
that the INS responds to that con-
gressional support," Gramm said.
