C-C Bulldogs win Gold Medals
A
USTIN—Why are
the Corrigan-Camden High
School football teams winners
during the fall?
Polks, it all started years and
years ago when the late Mr.
Jasper R. Cockrell served as su-
perintendent of Corrigan-Camden
ISO.
Mr. Cockrell served as coach,
principal and superintendent for
years. He was by far the No. 1 fan
of the Bulldogs in all sports.
Mr. Cockrell believed academ-
ics came first. He hired teachers
that loved students and loved to
teach. He also wanted a No. I
band that could play pretty music
and march at halftimes.
Loved track
Mr. Cockrell loved track and
field meets. Corrigan-Camden
ISD was among the first schools
to have an all-weather track in
Deep East Texas. White Oak
High School (west of Longview)
may be the first school (early
1960s) in East Texas with an
all-weather track.
When a new head football coach
was hired by Corrigan-Camden
ISD Board of Trustees, he was
told all athletes (boys and girls)
will run track.
Running track is a part of the
off-season program for Bulldog
athletes.
It is a tradition in C-C Coun-
try to run track. The Bulldogs
love to run. Take look at all the
trophies the Bulldogs have won in
the past 30-plus years.
Corrigan-Camden, Groveton and
Alto schools have top-notch
track and field programs.
UIL State Meet
Mr. Cockrell was a big fan of
the UIL State Meet each May in
Austin.
On Saturday afternoon, May 10
in Mike Myers Stadium on the
campus of The University of
Texas, the Bulldogs of Corri-
gan-Camden competed in the
97,h annual UIL Class 2A Meet
before a packed house.
Yes, Mr. Cockrell was looking
down from Heaven at the Bull-
dogs .
The names of C-C stars
pleased Coach Seven Armstrong
and his assistants.
The Corrigan-Camden 1600-
meter team of Damien Horace
(senior). Chase Ford (senior),
Chris Drayton (junior) and
Kameron Horace (junior) turned
on the jets to win the Gold Medals
with a time of 3:20.78.
How the other teams in the
1600-meter relay fared. 2. Crane,
3:21.66; 3. Weimar, 3:22.55; 4.
Arp, 3:223.35; 5. Idalou, 3:23.35;
Vand 6. Holliday, 3:23.74.
Chase Ford is a bom winner.
Super student-athlete. He has
lettered in football, basketball,
track and baseball,.
Kameron Horace, a junior,
played receiver and defensive
back for the Bulldog football team
the past two years, crossed the
finish line in a photo finish in
the 200-meter dash with a clock-
ing of 21,34 seconds. Trumaine
Jones of Aip High School was
runner-up at 21.36 seconds.
Horace also placed fourth in the
long jump at 22-feet, 6 %-inches.
The Bulldogs will continue
with off-season training this
month and the Bulldogs will be in
the weight room June and July.
Yes, the ‘Dogs are winners. (By
