Cowhands Try Pampa
By ALAN SEARSY
Trying to bounce back and win
their first district game, the Lub-
bock Westerners tangle with the
Caprock Longhorns tonight in Am-
arillo. Caprock, Amarillo’s newest
high school, is competing in the
district race for the first time this
year.
THE LONGHORNS have yet to
win their first football game. Hav-
ing lost to El Paso Burges and
Odessa Ector in non-conference
play, Caprock dropped their dis-
trict opener to Borger last week
33-0. In that game the Amarillo
school trailed in first downs 16-14,
and in rushing yardage 344-174.
Ricky Hickman, who lettered at
Amarillo High last year, was the
leading Longhorn rusher with 105
yards on 26 carries. Hickman was
also a standout on defense.
Coach John McGuire moved ov-
er from Tascosa to tackle the huge
job of starting football at the new
school. Four boys — halfbacks
Hickman (155) and Tom Price
(125); ends Stan Smith (160) and
Allen Adams (180)—have helped
to ease the problem of a lack of
experience somewhat. Several oth-
er newcomers who have also add-
ed much needed ability are tackle
The Lubbock High Cowhands
will host the Pampa “B” team
Thursday at 4 p.m. on the Chap-
man field gridiron. Thursday’s
game will mark the mid-point of
the ’63-’64 Cowhand schedule.
YESTERDAY, t h e Cowhands
met the Plainview “B” in their
third game of the district cam-
paign.
“We are expecting a pretty dif-
ficult game,” comments Coach Bob
McGuire. “Pampa has always been
a pretty difficult team to beat.”
The Shockers defeated the Borger
“B” team in Borger last week—
something that hasn’t happened in
the last several years.
PROBABLE OFFENSIVE start-
ers in the game with Pampa are:
ends Bo Boren, Wayne Lovell or
Pat McKinley; tackles Richard
Barrett and Ted Ratcliff; guards
John Folio will and Larry Carman;
and center Mike Wallace.
The backfield will include Rob-
by Layne or Darrell Hurst, quar-
terback; Dennis Zipps and Paul
Tabor, halfbacks; and Joe Mac
Tilson, fullback.
STARTING ON the defensive
team are: ends Charles Evans and
Boren; tackles Barrett and Rat-
cliff middle guard Carman or Ce-
cil Lofley; linebackers Followill
and Cezar Carvantes; cornerbacks
Sayne and Zipps; and halfbacks
Tabor and Terry Talley or Hurst.
Lubbock edged past the Amaril-
lo “B” team for their first district
win last week. The Cowhands
scored two touchdowns in the
third quarter and held on for a
12-6 victory.
A m ar i 11 o dominated play
throughout most of the game with
the exception of the third quarter.
The Cowhand defense was slug-
gish and their offense ineffective
during most of the game.
IN THE THIRD quarter, Lub-
bock scored its first touchdown
when Zipps raced 40 yards. Later
on in the same period, a pass in-
terference call gave the ball to the
Cowhands on the one-yard line.
On the next play from scrimmage
Tilson scored the Winning mar-
gin.
“We demonstrated what we can
do when we took the kickoff and
marched for a touchdown after a
relatively poor showing in the first
half,” stated Coach McGuire.

Teams Prepare For Tourneys;
Linksters Lose By One Stroke
Putting in plenty of extra work
in an effort to make their oncom-
ing seasons good ones, the track,
tennis and golf teams are working
out regularly each day in prepar-
ation for upcoming meets.
MACKENZIE PARK is the
scene of daily track workouts.
About 13 boys are out at this time.
But Coach Bob McGuire expects
several more boys to come out af-
ter football season is over. As of
now the boys are running about
two to four miles a day.
With a good number of sopho-
mores coming on, prospects are
high for a successful tennis season.
The squad practices until about
5:30 every afternoon during the
school week. Laps and sprints are

Also slated to see possible action
is fullback Larry Wilson. Wilson,
who has been out for the first part
of the season due to burns suf-
fered in a summer accident, has
been working out with the West-
erners for a couple of weeks and
should be ready for limited action.
LAST FRIDAY at Lowrey Field
the Westerners received their first
season loss at the hands of the
Tascosa Rebels 13-8. Tascosa
jumped to a 13-0 first half lead,
but then had to hold on to stop
a determined Lubbock attack in
the final quarter which produced
the Westerners’ only score. Lott
and Jenkins led the offensive at-
tack for Lubbock with the West-
erner quarterback compiling 71
yards on the ground on 14 carries
and adding 52 yards through the
air. Several of Lott’s passes were
dropped, as he completed only two
of eleven. Jenkins hit the Rebel
line for 58 yards in 11 tries. In
total yardage Tascosa let 242-201
and also in first downs 18-10.
The Westerner score came late
in the fourth quarter on a drive
which began when Lott returned
a punt 28 yards to the Rebel 28.
From that point it took 10 plays
to register the score with Lott go-
ing the final four yards on an off-
tackle slant to the right. He also
added the two-point conversion on
an end run.
