Improvement Noted
Baseballers Open In Snyder Tuesday
Strengthened by good pitching
and greatly improved hitting, the
Westerner baseball team opens its
1965 season Tuesday against the
Snyder Tigers in Snyder.
STARTING line-up for the Sny-
der ball game will consist of pitch-
er Dorian Clawson, catcher Jimmy
Boyd, first baseman David Mil-
burn, second baseman Richard
Bourland, third baseman Nathan
Lindley, shortstop Danny Nowak
and outfielders Chris Cox in left,
Joe Mack Tilson in center and Jer-
ry Brown in right. Also slated to
see action are pitchers Don Cole-
man and Wesley Verner, first base-
man Wayne Lovell and shortstop
Ronnie Shuffield. “We will sub-
stitute freely during pre-district
games to find the right combina-
tion before the district starts,”
commented Coach Earl Parker.
“Snyder always has a well-
coached ball club. They are sound
defensively and are always aggres-
sive.” Snyder has an outstanding
athlete in Leslie Brown. Last year
Brown played in the outfield
against Lubbock but has also play-
ed many other positions on the
field. Snyder usually has a strong
team elsewhere but no other out-
standing individuals. The Tigers
began their season last Tuesday
and will have played two games

Lubbock’s golf team finished the
Andrews Tournament in sixth
place last weekend with a 943 to-
tal. The Westerner linksmen were
led by Carl Pounds who shot
rounds of 76-80-73 for a 229 total.
Carl Kirk and David Cochran fin-
ished in second and third places
shooting 235 and 373, respectively.
TASCOSA, last year’s district
champion, won the Tourney with
a 903 total while Monterey was
third with 931.
Lubbock’s golfers travel to
Sweetwater tomorrow to compete
in the Sweetwater Tourney. The
linksters’ first district meet is in
Lubbock, March 12 and 13.
before the encounter with Lub-
bock.
ALTHOUGH weak in speed, the
Westerners will still use the hit
and run style of offense.
The Westerners then travel to
Levelland Friday to battle the
Lobos and Odessa Saturday for a
doubleheader with the Broncos.
Last year Lubbock took both
games from Levelland and split a
pair with Odessa. The Broncos,
who have acquired a new baseball
coach, will try to protect their
five-year unbeaten record against
the Westerners in Odessa. Lub-
bock’s first home game is Tuesday,
March 16, against Abilene at Mac-
kenzie State Park.
"THE OUTLOOK for district
honors this year is the best for
Lubbock in the last three years
because of working attitude and
experience,” stated Coach Parker.
“Almost everyone out is working
hard and looking forward to dis-
trict play.”
Anyone interested in watching
practice is invited to come to
Chapman any afternoon after
school. The Westerners will play
an intersquad game Friday at 2
p.m. at Lowrey Field for those who
would like to see the team in ac-
tion.
