GEORGE FIFTH IS PROCLAIMED
KING OF ENGLAND THIS AFTER-

King Edward of England died last
night shortly after midnight and
George V was proclaimed king this
afternoon at 4 oclock
Herald Special
London Hay 7 George Fifth was
formally proclaimed king of England
from the quadrangle of St James
Palace this afternoon The privy coun-
cil met at the palace and formally
declared Edward dead Then the
leaders visited George in an adjoin-
ing room and the Lord Chancellor ad-
vanced and administered the dual
oath affecting England and Scotland
The oath was responded to amidst op-
pressive silence The new ruler an-
nounced that he would ascend the
throne as George Fifth The heir ap-
parent Edward Albert stepped for-
ward and the oath of succession was
administered to him The entire
party then appeared in the quadrangle
headed by Sir Alfred Scott Gatty
king at arms of the Knights of the
Garter who proclaimed formally de-
claring Edward dead and George as-
King The heralds1 followed the troops
presented arms and everybody shout-
ed God save the king The her-
alds then marched about town reading
the proclamation a number of times
according to custom
