berland Presbyterian general assem-
bly met here today to celebrate the
one hundredth anniversary of the or
ganization of the denomination Al
though the Cumberland branch was
merged with the Presbyterian church
of the United States in 190G it still
continues to hold its own general as-
semblies
The Cumberland church which is
now rounding out the first century of
its existence was estahlished Feb
10 1810 by three ministers excom-
municated from the Presbyterian

Bernardino today began a three days
celebration of the one hundredth an-
niversary of its founding It was on
May 20 1S10 that a little band of
missionaries and soldiers from the San
Gabriel mission halted their march
and made the camp that grew into the
city of San Bernardino It was on
the feast day of San Bernardino de
Sienna and in honor of that saint the
little band of Franciscan missionaries
renamed the beautiful valley which
had been known among them pre
viously as EI Valle de San Jose

The business session of the meeting
was devoted chiefly to the discussion
of plans for the national convention to
he held in Providence this fall by the
Atlantic Deeper Waterways Associa-
tion The association was organized
at Baltimore a jear ago to promote
the construction as a national enter-
prise of a chain of canals connecting
natural and protected waterways along
the Atlantic coast thereby forming a
continuous inner navigation route
from from Boston to Key West

convention in Memphis today with a
Uige attendance of leading repre-
sentatives of the trade in the two

convention provides for addresses by
several speakers of prominence in
addition to the transaction of the
regular business of the association

Great Northern Cotton Belt and

The gentlemen named conferred with
the commission yesterday and asked
for an interpretation of the commis-
sions refigeiator tariff insisting
that the cost of loading which is
borne by the shipper includes J the
cost of stripping and bracing in
shipments of fruit and produce The
material used for stripping and brac-
ing is quite a little item of expense
hence the railroads and the shippers
