Cleveland Says the Story Is a Lie
Out of the Whole Cloth
Washington March 4 Jn the
house today Mr Webb of North
Carolina called attention to the
statement made a few davs ago
by Mr Scott of Kansas that a
negro had dined in the wiute
house while Mr Cleveland was
president and answered that he
had written the former president
sending him uu extract from the
record and asking him if the
statement made by Mr Scott was
true
Thi < morning he said I
received the following reply
which he read amid applause on
the democratic side
Princeton March 2 1001
Hon E II Webb Houc of
Representatives
Dear Sir It is a matter of
small concern to me that a Mr
Scott has seen fit to use my name
in a display of his evil propensi-
ties on the floor of the house of
representatives
In answer to your inquiry
however I have to say of his
statement that a colored man
named C II1 Taylor took lunch
with me at the white house that
it is a deliberate fabrication out
rf the whole cloth
Mr Scott accepted the state-
ment of Mr Cleveland as true
and offered an apology to the
former president
