THE JOKE OF IT
The joke is on Texas in that
while she is instructing her dele-
gates to the Sau Antonio convention
to stand pat for Parker the east al-
ready realizes that Parker has been
counted down and out Here are
the facts The New York World
says the instructed vote stands at
present for Hearst 180 votes for
Parker 175 uninstructed 227 and
about 100 other votes for favorite
sons of the various states Con-
ceding that Parker will get Texas
which we do not believe it is cer-
tain that to offset Texas Mi
votes Hearst will get the Illinois
vote of 51 voles which will still
give him a clear lead over Parker
Now to nominate Parker or
any other man it will be neces
uy for him to get JGG votes out
of the 1000 total of the conven
tion Do you believe Parker can
got them after he has been able so
far to get only 175 with all the
boosting the metropolitan pres >
the congressional liufcl and the
money barons of New York have
gicn him If the Bryan wing of
the party can control 335 votes in
the convention they can prevent
the nomination of the Hill candi-
date No man who will reason
rationally can doubt their ability
to control more than 335 votes
So then we ask you Parker en
Ihusiasts whore is the Parker
cinch Has ho walk overpros
pucLs Do you believe ho has a
ghost of a show Tor nomination
The Hikaii > still stands pat on
its opinion expressed weeks and
weeks ago that Parker is impossi-
ble Then why should Texas go
to St Louis tied to a corpse It
may be good politics but we cant
see it

JUDGE REAGANS VICTORY
The instructions given inthis
county Saturday for ludgc Parker
was distinctly a Reagan victory
nothing more nor less The mat-
ter of instructing for Parker came
up in the committee room and was
voted down by a vote of nine to
six The committee that voted
down the Parker resolution was
composed oft one member from
each voting precinct in the coun-
ty and the result of the vote
showed conclusively that the
county was opposed to instruc-
tions But in the afternoon when
the convention had finished its
work Judge lteagan was intro-
duced to the convention and made
a most earnest appeal to the dele
gate to send an instructed dele-
gation for Parker Following his
talk a majority of the Uclegates
voted to sustain him There was
no Parker enthusiasm in the con-
vention but as many of the dele-
gates expressed it they had rather
waive their preferences in the
premises than to disappoint their
esteemed friend So the Herald
says it was a lteagan and not a
Parker victory
The Hkuald will go further and
say that to Judge lleagan more
J jg thanany otherman or influence

Texas honor Judge Keagans opin-

However all that Judge lleagan
and Texas can do for Parker docs
not remove the fact that he is al-
ready defeated for the nomination

PALESTINE TEXAS JUNE 13 1904
A STRONC ENDORSEMENT
It is a pleasure to the IIkuald
to refer to the very strong en-
dorsement given to our friend and
fellow citizen the Hon Benjamin
II Gardner by hundreds of his
neighbors in this count This
endorsement we take it is not
given merely as a compliment to
a home man but is an earnest of
the high esteem in which Judge
Gardner is held as a citizen a
man as a lawyer and as a candi-
date in every way qualified to
serve his district as judge Those
who know Judge Gardner best es
teem him most and because his
home people know him as a man-
fully trustworthy of the honor
they gladly give him the warm
endorsement that has been pre
seated to him in the form of a
letter signed by hundreds of his
friends
Hon John H Riaoax was en-
dorsed by the county convention
of this county its well as by a
number of other counties as one
of the delegates at large from
Texas to the St Louis convention
That the Judge will be one of the
delegates there is no doubt
Tin IIkrald aint kicking It
was forced by the unit rule to vole
with its delegation in the county
convention for the Parker instruc-
tion and has n can tied to it as a
delegate to San Antonio and we
will tike our medicine without
making even a face but well be
hanged if we dont hate to tee
Texas tied to a corpse and lose an
opportunity to cut some ice at St
Louis Parker is just as impossi-
ble as Mirandy Johnston Cliim
