THE PALESTINE DAILY HERALD

W M AND H V HAMILTON JR
The hew tax levy was placed at
S100 That is a low taxrate
and as reasonable aa people could
expect for a town of thin size and
population Palestine Herald
Palestine owes about 100000
Its property is assessed at a higher
value than property is assessed at
in Tyler The difference in the
assessed valuation in the two
towns is about one million dollars
we are informed in favor of
Palestine So that when our large
bonded indebtedness is taken into
account with the fact that Tyler
is required to pay 5000 tun year
on the Jester debt of 15000 to be
paid in one two and three years
it will be seen that Palestine and
Tyler are very close together in-
current expense accounts If
property in Tyler was assessed as
high as it is placed in Palestine
the tax rate in Tyler would now
be as low as it is in the former
city Palestine enjoys the advan-
tage over Tyler in that it has in it
no newspaper which is trying to
injure it by vicious ma laoious and
slanderous artioles Tyler inter-
ests its business men and prop-
erty holders and its reputation
are constantly assailed by an editor
who has nothing to lose if the city
should be destroyed tomorrow
He is living at the expense of the
merchants of Tyler and yet he is
rranf
tbmers and to double their in-
surance and for the sole excuse
that he failed to retain as small a
thing as a little city printing
Yes Palestine is fortunate in not
having to tote such a burden as
Tyler is afflicted with in the editor
to whom we allude But Tyler
will come out in the end as a
winner When the people abroad
learn the truth Tyler will recover
from the blightning effects of all
that is being said against it by
disgruntled persons which is her
alded abroad by a disappointed
manWhen
When the government of Tyler
is compared with any city in its
class in Texas during the last
three years there is not one of
them that can make a cleaner
showing in the matter of the
economical expenditure of public
money The Courier says this
much because it is true and be-
cause the truth should be pro
claimed from the housetops when
the occasion demands that it
should be done Tyler Courier
Tyler is in the throes of a most
interestingand exciting campaign
and the issue is whether or not
the city corporation is to be abol-
ished The best citizens of the
town are divided on the question
No matter what the result the
agitation will do good Snch agi
nations when the time is ripe for
them always do good Like the
passing of an electric storm the
atmosphere is cleared and health-
ier conditions arc the result

PALESTINE TEXAS SEPTEMBER 18 1905
PALESTINE AND TYLER
Social equality between the races
can only be brought about by the
free consent of both parties to the
social contract therefore so long
as one race objects the other race
is perpetually debarred from social
intercourse with the race which
objects All the white man has
to do is to stay on his own side of
the fence sind the negro is com
pelled to stay on his side The
fact is the negro is not clamoring
for social equality Of course
there are a few fools among us
just as there are among other
races If these fools should want
eocial equality the white people
would not give it to them then
why should either race waste any-
time ovcr this class of people
We need o divert our attention
towards the development of the
Wonderful resources of the south
