a hack and told the driver that he
wanted to go to the best hotel in the
city The driver told him all right
nnd started out for the hotel The
drummer said he drove him about
for a full half hour it seemed to him

LEGISLATIVE
Aldrich Starts Rate Fight
The first Important skirmish on the
Una of the coming legislative battle
over the administrations plan of fed-
eral control of railroad rates occurred
in the senate when a speech by Clay
the Ueorgiu Democrat in favor of the
rate legislation was Interrupted by Ald
tfeb the Rhode Island veteran Repub-
lican wheel horse of many tariff bat
ties who is be-
lieved to repre-
sent the power-
ful Standard Oil
and railroad In
terests Clt
had referred
the Hea t y <
as showing the
growth of mu-
nicipal owner-
ship sentiment
which he per-
sonally deplor-
ed as a reason
for rate control
Thereupon Aid
Senator Aldrich ricli remarked
that Hearst was in fact the originator
of the Idea of conferring the rate pow-
er on the Interstate commerce commis-
sion in a bill which he introduced at a
former session of congress and he
taunted the Democrats with the state-
ment that it was generally believed
hat their nest candidate would be
either Hearst or Bryan Bailey Dem
Tev then got Into the fray by saying
that the Democrats were willing and
eager to vote for the recommendation
of a Bepublican president which was
taken bodily from their national plat-
form and he invited Aldrich to de-
clare himself either for or against the
Roosevelt policy and the third term
boom The Rhode Island senator
avoiding the direct question proceeded
to denounce the whole theory of rate
fixing deploring the Idea of destroying
competition among the railroads as
likely to result in the demoralization of
business Interests This was accepted
as un open declaration of war against
the administration
