FARMERS AND FACTORIES
The Southern Farm Magazine ob-
serves with pride the growth of a
spirit among farmers that is leading
them to encourage the establishment
or manufactories In their midst Can-
ning factories cotton factories furni-
ture factories fertilizer factories and
many other kinds are being erected
largely through the capital of south-
ern farmers This Is true wisdom on
their part In the midst of factories
a large per ccntnge ofyfarm products
reach markets without the cost of
transportation and without the in-
tervention of the commission mer-
chant In such conditions the farmer
Is also encouraged and stimulated to
make his land produce the largest
quantity of marketable products If
the Income of the farmer could be
doubled by having convenient mar-
kets for his products it would double
the value of his land and make the
payment of his Iiixcb and other nec-
essary expense for the Improvement
of his farm far easier Bring the
markets for produce nearer make
labor more efficient by paying bet-
ter wages and providing other Induce-
ments such as schools that make It
more Intelligent utilize the forces
and materials with which nature has
endowed the south and the burdens
of government will be as light as a
feather upon the back of un ox And
It should never be forgotten that di-
versity in production gives the larg-
est possible employment to labor It
creates better and more numerous
markets it Increases the price of
wliat a farmer has to sell and re-
duces the price of what he has to
buy it makes the farm far more
profltuble It lightens the burden of

taxes while It increases the taxable
wealth It should always be remem-
bered also that the best labor always
gravitates to those regions where It
is best paid It Is a great mistake lo
suppose that the profits of labor are
In proportion to its cheapness The
reverse is often more true As a
general proposition if labor is cheap
it Is because It is not profitable
The candidates

Next Tuesday settles the Issue with

This has been an Ideal day In East
Texas and everybody Is smiling
Do not forget to put stress on the
fact when writing to people at a dis-
tance that Anderson county Is com-
ing to be the big commercial orchard
center of the East Texas fruit belt
This Is a fact
How much good road work has
been done In Anderson county the
past few days Has the split log
been given a show Somebody
should make an experiment with this
method of road working and let the
public know of the results
It is the opinion of the editor of
the Denlson Herald that Texas needs
an uptodate agricultural department
in charge of a man of experience and
ability with sufficient funds at his
command to make it possible to do
those things which such a depart-
ment ought todo It could be made
bys far the most valuable department
of the state government V
f6r its expression on the negro ques
tlon In yesterdays paper In making
such comment the Herald had in
mind the good of the negro as well
as the white man It is an unde
niable fact that the white man is go-
ing to protect his women if it re-
quires the extermination oft a race
of people to do it This Is a truth
the negro had as well accept now as
later It then behooves the bptter
element of negroes to get busy and
deliver up the criminal element when
It commits crime against the coun-
try They cannot with safety protect
and shield such characters tiniest
they arc at the same time willing to
accept the responsibility of such
crimes This Is a reasonable issue
and the wellmeaning and right
thinking negro had as well accept
and act on It These crimes that
shock civilization cannot continue
It is unfortunate that the last leg-
islature made such a mess of the
amendment to be submitted at the
fall elections increasing the pay of
the law malicrs The proposition to
increase the pay is all right In our
opinion though we may be in a
minority but believe In that way tho
right kind or men can be secured to-
go to Austin nnd make the laws for
the state of Texas and that they will
be worthy of their hire Why shoult
men be expected to go to Austin nnd
especially men of ability who would
be qualified to make laws for the
greatest state in tho union for a sal
nry that will pay their expenses and
nothing else However the loglsla
ture some of the threedollaraday
kind hitched on to this amendment
an antifree pass clause in the hope
of catching votes and then made a
blunder which will leave tho four
year senators without any pay for
the last two years of their service
These blunders will and ought to
cause the defeat of what is really a
good amendment Just an cMimple
or the false idea of economy some
men have nnd shows what cheap
men will do It Is the same In ever
line of business and a cheap man Is
expensive at any price Caldwell

TEXAS IRON INDUSTRY
Speaking of the Texas Iron Indus-
try the Manufacturers Record says
Governor Lanhura after a careful
inspection of the iron industry at
Rusk operated under the auspices of
the Texas penitentiary system is en-
thusiastic over tho demonstration
r pv B
there that Iron manufacturing In Tex-
as can be profitably conducted He
found the furnace at Rusk running
night and day producing 100 tons of
pig iron every twentyfour hours and
the pipe factory the capacity of
whlch is to bo doubled within the
next two or three months producing
thirty tons of pipe iron daily The
experiment of using coke Instead of
charcoal In smelting has pro cd ac-
cording to him a great success and
he is convinced that the work of the
Rusk furnace should cause the in-
vestment In Texas of large 3 ms of
money for the utilization of the iron
ores of the eastern part of the state
and of the Llano field Railroad de
velopment in the southwest and the
exploitation of the coal fields In In-
dian Territory are likely within a
few years to solve the problem of
fuel in iron making in Texas even if
that state does not do so thoroughly
on its own account In the meantime
Texas too may reasonably be ex-
pected to become an Important factor
In the distribution of iron products
