Mr R J Reynolds president and
founder of the largest manufacturing
plant east ot the Mississippi belongs
to that class of men whose success in
Hie has been duo to their own energy
and Industry though the circum-
stances of Mr Reynolds boyhood af-
forded him a sound basis upon which
18 build He was endowed by nature
wiUi health and strength full of en
ergy and ambitious while yet a ten-
der age to lead In whatever he under
took His father a large planter and
manufacturer In Patrick county Vir-
ginia made his yearly contracts with
his laborers on the condition that they
kept up with young Dick
Even as a boy Mr Reynolds was
never contented unless in some way
employed He found pleasure In tasKs
that others found too tedious or bur-
densome
Mr Reynolds while In his teens
planted cultivated cured manufactur-
ed and worked In every department ot
the manufacture and had successfully
held the position of manager of a
factory In the year 1875 hardly more
than a boy he was manufacturing to-
bacco under the name of R J Rey-
nolds Co In a very small factory
at Winston N C
The methods and processes of man
ufacturing tobacco In those days were
very crude Other men were content
with the machinery processes and
methods In use Mr Reynolds and
the men associated with him worked
out by experiment the reasons for
the prevailing methods and by the
help of the skilled men in charge of
the various departments of the manu-
facturing plant they Invented per-
fected and adopted improved machin
ery and processes until today Uie flat

plctcly revolutionized and Uie R J

versity It was founded to meet the
needs and promote the welfare of our
people That the facilities which It
affords are being appreciated is evi-
denced by the constantly increasing
attendance from year to year There
is no reason why the young men and
women of Texas should go out of the
State to obtain a first class education
and we are glad to say the trend is no
longer in that direction Being an In-
stitution ot the commonwealth the
University of Texas prepares men and
women for service to the State and it
believes that practical commonsense
knowledge makes a good and useful
citizen In its several departments It
is admirably equipped for meeting the
educational needs of Texans If any
