honor within the next thirty days
down there When I am not able to
get out to our various general offices
or Mr Jeffery does not I usually
have our general managers come in-
here every six weeks or two months
to report and talk over the business
of the roads they manage Mr
Clarke has not made any clean sweep
of officials He has I believe asked
for the resignation of one or two gen-
eral officers but he is in charge and
knows why he did it We have not
asked him about it and dont intend
to He is entirely capable or we
wouldnt have sent him there and
will back him up In what he does so
long as it is in our interests and the
interests of the people of Texas
You can say this through the
GlobeTJemocrat that within as shoit
a time as possible the service of the
Gould lines in Texas will have been
improved We thought we were do-
ing all we consistently could in this
respect for that is the policy we fol-
low to give the best possible facili-
ties but we know now that a number
of improvements must be effected
and this will be done We probably
will build new stations at a number of
points make improvements at a num-
ber of points make improvements in1
rolling stock and roadbed and provide
more through and local trains

The following appeared in Fridays
St Louis GlobeDemocrat from that
papers special correspondent in New
York
New York Feb 6 Any assump
tion that the administration of the af-
fairs of the International Groat
Northern of Texas as conducted by
Horace Clarke vice president and
general manager was viewed with
disapproval at the general offices of
the Gould railroads here is totally
without foundation Mr Clarke who
was appointed on December 8 arrived
Jntbis city from Palestine Texas on
pt and was fir daily con
rtrip We3SiSday morS
imiors were at once started
That Mr Clarke lad been recalled
that his administration of the Interna-
tional Great Northern was not pop-
ular and that he was busily engaged
In trying to defend himself It was
also asserted that he had let out-
most of the officials of the road in
Texas thereby bringing upon himself
great unpopularity with the business-
men of the state Another rumor
went so far as to assert that the
Texas business men had sent lengthy
petitions to Mr Gould requesting the
reinstatement of the men who had
been dismissed and the dismissal of
Mr Clarke
Mr Gould received the GlobeDemo
crat correspondent this afternoon in
his office after the rumors had been
brought to his attention and was
most emphatic in denying them With
Mr Gould at the time were E T Jef-
fery president of the Western Pacific
and the Denver Rio Grande the
Goulds righthand man in their rail-
road affairs and Senator Clark of
Montana
The administration of Mr Clarke
has so far met with our heartiest ap-
proval said Mr Gould and his pres-
ence in New York has been in re-
sponse to a personal request from me
to come here and talk over the af-
fairs of the road It was not due to
any complaints for I have heard
none neither have I received or heard
of any petitions from the business-
men of Texas directed to this or any
other office connected with our rail-
roads If such a petition had been
sent here it would have received our
most careful attention for we want
to do all we can to please all the peo-
ple of Texas and wherever else our
lines run
We have nothing to conceal in-
terjected Mr Jeffery and want the
public in our confidence whenever our
affairs are of such nature as to direct-
ly concern the public
Mr Clarke was sent to the Inter-
national Great Northern to give
the people of Texas the best possible
service continued Mr Gould and
I am positive he will do it Far from
being unpopular with the business-
men he has already been banqueted a
number of times by business men in
