One thing is now dead surem the
m
governor and the legislature espec
ially the senate will never get to
gether and the quicker the scrap is
over the better for the people The
senate is against the governor and
they are not to be pacified
The hero worshippers are a strong
organization in Oklahoma Governor
Haskell got out of his court trouble
in connection with the land fraud
cases because of a defect in the in-
dictment and his friends got a brass
band and went around and serenaded
him on his vindication In Oklaho-
ma a faulty indictment seems to be
equal to a vindication
Not every man can prove his pa
triotism by being elected to office
but there are daily opportunities for
every man to do something for the
good of his town and many fail to
qualify along this line The fellow
who is willing to show his patriotism
as a public officer only must expect
some people to doubt his sincerity
The voter will do well to make a
mental note of the fact that some
men never show a willingness to
work for the town until they are put
into office
The Herald is very much In earnest
about wanting to see a concerted ef
fortmade to fill Anderson county
with good prosperous andJiappy peo-
ple We arein earnest jabout u
mofteTrvDecatiseJitt e Know we have op
portunities here that would be of
benefit to many people less fortu
nately situated and where such peo-
ple can improve their financial and
possibly their physical condition and
we are interested in such a move-
ment because we know too that by
thus helping other people to get bet-
ter fixed in the world we will be
helping our town and county and
then ourselves If the right kind of
people will come to this county and
go to work with a determination to
succeed they need have no fear of
failure Anderson county has the
soil and the climate to make an ideal
home and the people here are neigh-
borly and will help the man who tries
to help himself
Governor Campbell landed on the
legislature good and strong in a spec-
ial message Sunday and from the
noise his remarks occasioned he
must have hit somewhere pretty near
home The senate answered the gov-
ernors message by firmly telling him
to mind his own business The situ-
ation at Austin is one to be deplored
and from such a condition little good
can result to the people of the state
The Herald believes that twothirds
of the devilment that has been done
at Austin has resulted from the in-
terference of outside parties from the
lobby if you please We do not be-
lieve any gieat number of the legis-
lators have been bought in fact such
a course is altogether unnecessary
but many of the members have been
persuaded to do certain things in the
firm belief that they are best serv-
ing the people when if they had a
larger scope of conditions they would
realize that selfish interests had been
using them through flattery and de-
ception The Herald agrees with the
governor in his criticism on the com-
mercial secietaries and believes their
little lobby at Austin has been ex-
tremely huitful to the reputation of
the state in creating impressions
abroad that are not warranted by
facts In the meantime the legisla-
ture is drawing full pay and the peo
ple are getting very little for the
money expended
