leaving Monday for El Campo to make
his home there.
Mrs A C. Balhom and daughter,
Katherine of Elgin spent the week
end in the Eddie Backhaus and T. C.
Stephens homes.
Mrs. Clark Wright of Miami, Florida
is here visiting her mother, Mrs. Fan-
nie Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. A. A.
Offield.
Edward Luc key who has been sta-
tioned at St. Jo Missouri, Army Air
Field, for some months is spending a-
two weeks furlough with his parents,
Mr .and Mrs. P. E. Luckey and family.
Charles Henry (Petie) Coffield left
Monday for Culver, Indiana, where he
enters his senior year at Culver Mili-
tary Academy. H. H. Coffield made
the trip with his son.
Mrs. Lloyd McGuire, Miss Della
Brockenlbu; h, Miss Doris Aleyander
and Emmitt McGuire, spent Sunday in
Houston as guests of Mr. and Mr:.
Wynette Harris.
Mrs. W. A. Jennings and daughter.
Mrs. E. L. Montgomery of Abilene,
were guests for several days at the
week end of Mr. and Mrs. J. W.. Gar-
ner. Mrs Jennings is the sister of
Mr. Garner.
George E. Gilmore underwent an
emergency appendectomy at a Temple
hospital Sunday and Is reported doing
nicely in spite of the fact that the ap-
pendix was found to be ruptured. His
wife is with him at Temple.
Mrs. W. H. Wells and niece, Nan
Fowler, of Phoenix, Arizona, have been
visiting her parents and nephew, Ray-
mond1 Fowler, leaving Saturday for
Hot Springs, Arkansas, to visit Mrs.
Grace Fowler. Raymond Fowler has
been spending the summer with Mr.
and Mrs. A. R. Rial and Mrs. Kelly”s
son, Gene Kelly, of Gay Hill.

Miss Margaret Jenkins of Ft. Worth
spent her vacation here with her mo-
ther, Mrs. Nellie Neal and the two
have visited relatives in Houston and
Galveston over tire past week end.
Miss Jenkins returned to Ft. Worth
on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fulbright Mays of
Dallas were guests last week of Mr.
and Mrs. J W. Garner. They were
accompanied by Mrs. Susie Williams
who has been spending some time
with them but will remain in Rock-
dale indefinitely.
Mrs. E. D. Hardie was called to
Kennedy Monday by the death of her
sister, Mrs. D. A. McCoskill. Others
going with her were H. V. Hardie of
McGregor, Mrs. Lucille Young of Tem-
ple, Miss Emma Hardie, and Miss
Zeffie Wiggins of Jacksonville.
Misses Ava Dean Nicholson and
June Alford, spent their vacations vis-
iting Lt. W. H. Nicholson, stationed at
Fort Bliss, El Paso. They went to
Juarez, Mexico and through the Carls-
bad Cavern, New Mexico, spent the
remainder of their time in Minneapo-
lis, Minnesota.
Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Stone and little
daughter of Beaumont were guests the
past week in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. C. W. Stephens. Mrs. Stephens
who is the aunt of Mrs. Stone accom-
panied them back to Beaumont where
she visited her sister Mrs. Hodgson and
later went to Houston where she spent
the week end with her daughter, Miss
Brockenlbush, Miss Doris Alexander
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Lightfoot and
two children, of Ft. Worth, spent the
week end here in the heme of the for-
mer’s mother, Mrs. A. H. Lightfoot.
Mr. Lightfoot, who was with a Ford
Company in Shreveport, La., and in
east Texas for a number of years, is
now partner-manager of Texas Mo-
tors, Ford dealership in Ft. Worth.
Miss Alva Dean Nicholson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Nicholson of
Rockdale, is visiting her parents,
awaiting orders to report for active
<1 uly in the SPARS at Palm Beach,
Florida. Miss Nicholson is a graduate
of Rcckdale high school and Durham's
Business^ College at Austin. She was
a stenographer for the State DepaCt-
ment ct Education, Austin, and then a
secretary to the Superintendent of the
SoutheRn Pacific Railroad. Houston.
Captain and Mrs. Calvin Moore and
son, Calvin Jr., who have been spend-
ing several weeks in the home of her
mother, Mrs. O. K. Phillips, have gone
to Hempstead where they will be lo-
cated. Captain Moore has accepted a
position with A. & M. College and has
been placed in charge as inspector of

were here last Wednesday to attend
funeral services for their sister-in-law,
Mrs. Phillip Towery, who passed away
at the home of her mother, Mrs. Geo.

Aid Meets At
Church Wednesday
The Ladies Aid of Peace Lutheran
Church met Wednesday afternoon of
last week in the basement room of the
church with Mrs. Joe Hirt as hostess.
The devotional pregram opened with
the singing of hymn, “I Lay My Sins
On Jesus.” This was followed by the
Scripture lesson from John 8:12-14.
and a prayer by Rev. E. C. Elzey.
After the singing of hymn, "I Love
To Tell The Story,” the interesting
topic was discussed being, Moslems—
"That They May Have the Light of
Life.” The devotional closed with the
Lord’s Prayer.
A brief business session was held
after which there was a social hour
and refreshments served to twenty-
two member and one gues.
