1949 models, when Chevrolet set
new volume records to once again
lead the industry in sales, most of
the bodies are available in “spe-
cial” and “de luxe” treatments.
Improvements through the 1950
chassis and bodies are rnairy. A
new “Power-Jet” carburetor elim-
inates the "lean” periods in gaso-
line feed and affords quicker
warmup in cold weather. Larger
exhaust valve capacity helps power
output. Each of the six-cylinder
passenger car engines follows the
traditional, economical valve-in-
head design. In the new bodies,
stylists have accomplished striking
effects with smart, two-tone up-
holstery and freshly-fashioned ex-
terior metalwork.
The Powerglide automatic trans-
mission makes use of hydraulic
torque conversion, a method of
smoothly transmitting power to I
wheels that received considerable
impetus during the war in the
search for more maneuverable
armored vehicles. ,
Driving with the Powerglide is ]
corporated on the quadrant. Al-
though the drive continues through
the converter, low and reverse
gears increase the power on the
rear wheels by definitely fixing
the ratio of revolutions betw’een
the crank and propeller shafts.
To provide the gears a simple
simple. On the steering column
is mounted a quadrant in minia-
ture somewhat like power controls
The quadrant is

the starter button on the dash
remains ineffective. With the en-
gine started, the lever is moved
to place the pointer at ”D” (Drive).
For ordinary travel forward move-
ment thereafter is dependent on
throttle pressure alone.
To bring the car to a stop the
throttle foot is moved to the brake
as desired. Resumption of for-
ward movement in traffic is ob-
tained merely by depressing the
throttle.
Because engineers must recog-
nize that driving is not confined
to forward movement on level,
paved highways, the “R” (Reverse)
and “L” (Low) positions are in-
introducing POWER
automatic transmission
