Information From
Soil Testing Lab
College Station, August 25 —
Getting the most production from
every acre on the farm is just good
business.
To do this, says M. K. Thornton,
extension agricultural chemist,
more information is needed than
can be gleaned from actually work-
ing the soil and watching crops
grow on it. The chemical labora-
tory with its test tubes and ma-
chines and expert technicians is
needed to gel information which
can be used by the farmer to in-
crease yields and the returns from
farming.
The basis for soil building, says
the chemist, should bo a soil testing
program. Fields on which winter
pastures and legumes will soon be
planted should be tested now*.
Thornton points out that several
days are required to complete the [knowing what ails an unproduc-

Thornton's recommendations will
cover such items as the typo and
amount of fertilizers needed for
particular cr ops and cropping prac-
tices.
Since the laboratory commenced
operations in the fall of 195(1, the
volume of samples submitted for
testing has steadily increased. Last
year 10,497 samples were handled
by the laboratory. Three other
such facilities have been establish-
ed in the state to speed-up the pro-
gram and to get the laboratories
closer to the farm.
