Summer Theater 108th Binhdoy
Is 70 Years Old
By JOHN A. HAHN
l'ailed Preu Staff Correspondent
BOSTON — a pt - The sum-
mer theater movement is 70 years
old
The so-ealled Citronelia Circuit
fnirltnamed for a mosquito repel-
lent! began at Peaks Island, Me .
In 1887 and now is a network of
more than 200 intensive training
centers for Broadway, television
and the movies.
The players love it. and so do
the customers, in increasing num-
bers yearly.
The summer theater has be-
come the lifeline of experience
for youthful thespians who have
small chance to break directly
into the Broadway theater these
years.
Neophyte players add to their
acting experience by making sets
and learning first hand the intri-
cacies of stage lighting. The
The young players also get a
chance to ruh elbows with pro-
fessionals and appear before the
public and get paid for It.
•0 In New England—
New England, where the sum-
mer theater began, still is the
most important part of the cir-
cuit. The Lake W'halom Play-
house at Fitchburg, Mass., estab-
lished in 1893, and the Lakewood
Theater near Skowhegan, Me.,
which started about 1900, still are
going strong.
Latest count shows there are 90
straw-hat theaters In the six-etate
region. Box office receipts are
expected to top the J2 500.000
mark this summer.
The popularity of the summer
theater moved southward from
Cape Cod Into Connecticut and
New Jersey and westward into
New York and Pennsylvania
Summer theaters also flourish in
Delaware. Maryland, Virginia,
Kentucky, North Carolina and are
scattered across the country to
the West Coast.
Summer productions of apeota-
uJar Broadway musicals such as
“Oklahoma!” and "South Pa-
cific’’ attract almost as muok at-
tention in spakB<Mpwn hot mme-
' ther versions as they did origi-j
nally. Thousands of theater-goers i
who were unable to get tickets for
! original productions flock to the
summer theaters.
New plays are born and others
are revived on the straw-hat oir-j
cult. TV stars such as Imngene'
Coca and Faye Emerson v
summer productions to get the
feel of playing before live audi-
ences.
