"Fighting Westerner' Paul Havens receives his trophy trom Dr. E. C. Leslie at the
All-Sports banquet March 2. The three-year track letterman was named for the award
by coaches because of his attitude and participation throughout the last three years
at LHS. Site for the banquet and presentation was Van s Cak-ring Service
Westerners Welcome Round-Up ’72
“Vaquero del Oeste” swings into action today as Westerners appear
in their Western outfits to participate in the annual Westerner Day.
Round-Up favorites will be announced in a Westerner Day assembly
during homeroom. Nominees are Sally Bartley, Nancy Jennings, Lisa
Sharp, David Hicks, Keith Mulkey and Charles Nickell The assembly will
also include a preview of the gym show and a teachers skit.
ROUND-UP WILL actually reach its peak Saturday at 5 p.m. with a rodeo
and barbecue at Chapman field. The rodeo will feature homeroom Wrang-
lers in the egg toss, wheel barrow race, sack race, three-legged race and
greased pig chase.
At 7 p.m. students will return to Lubbock High where the Wranglers will
lead the way in stepping out an old-fashion square dance called by Buster
Dickenson. There will also be a showing of the movie "Son of Paleface”
starring Bob Hope and Roy Rogers at 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m. A talent
show in the Lady Luck Saloon will begin at 9 p.m. with the regular dance
played by Gnash running from 9:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m.
"We who have worked on Round-Up have the goal of making it success-
ful, and enjoyable for everyone. We hope that by March 11 we will have
completed our goal for Round-Up 72,” stated Carolyn Croslin, Trail Boss
(Round-Up Chairman).
TRAIL HANDS (committee heads) for Round-Up were Karen Price, pur-
chasing; Lisa Sharp, programs; Sharon Harris, publicity; Freda Ramsey
and Nancy Jennings, gym show; Martha Phillips and Gay Tocci, cafeteria;
Mitchell Gibbs and and Dan Morris, rodeo; Sarah Holly, auditorium.
Decorating the gym was Nancy Shurbet, Andrea Little and Cindy Moss.
Matt Brown took care of the AV work while Connie Jones was in charge
of arm bands.
OTHER TRAIL HANDS were Roger McCrummen. wrangler election,
Barbara Hensley and Cyd Cheatham, decorations; Greg Duran, gunfights;
and Debbie Gummelt, food arrangements.
Cost will be $1.50 for the meal and rodeo and $1 for the activities at
Lubbock High.
"I WANT TO THANK all my committee heads that made Vaquero del
Oeste' come together. We still need people to help us. especially Saturday
morning to put up decorations, and the night after to help clean-up. If you
haven't helped us before, now is your chance," concluded Carolyn.
