Mike Cuoliar claims In' pitch-
es best In \v.:rm weather.
But VVvCr.cr.day night he was
as hut as lie's ever been and
the temperature was a chilly
40 degrees.
Be {tie only 5,432 shivering
fans in Baltimore's Memorial
Stadium, Cuellar held the De-
troit Tigers hitless over the
last 8 1-3 Innings, facing the
minimum of 25 batters as the
Orioles outlasted the Tigers, 3-
2 in 10 innings.
And the 31-year-old southpaw-
had to be that good, because
he caught Denny McLain on
one of his better nights. Mc-
Lain retired 21 batters in a row
before Elrod Hendricks doubled
in the 10th to set up the winning
run. Momenta later, Mark Be-
langer, who banged in all the
Orioles runs, singled to end it.

Ground Rules Change
At Harrelson Meet
By MILTON RUMMAN
UPI Sport* Writer
NEW YORK (UPI) - This
wasn't Portnoy's Complaint,
this was Ken Harrelson's, so
naturally there had to be some
different ground rule*.
No obscene language was
permitted.
Everybody took a blood oath
not to use that dirty five-letter
word. Money.
The reason was obvious.
They didn't want un.vbody
else getting ideas, which is ra-
ther amusing because how are
you ever going to keep ’em
down on the farm now that Ken
Harrelson and Don Clendcnon
have found out what it’s like in
the big city.
Nonetheless, nobody wanted
to mention that filthy word
money in the baseball commis-
sioner's office Tuesday.
That was where Harrelson's
switcheroo took place.
He did it all in four hours
and 15 minutes. By agreeing to
suit up with the Cleveland In-
dians after previously saying
he wouldn't, the "Hawk" broke
the all-time underwater record
for retiring and unretlrlng
without even holding his nose.
In the process, he shattered
the two popular notions that 1.
money can’t buy everything,
and 2. baseball is dying.
Baseball is dying all right.
It's dying so much that a
shaggy-haired .217 hitter chang-
ing his mind generated more
lines than a proposal by the
excitement and bigger head
President of the United States
for tax reform.
Harrelson arrived at the
commissioner's office along
with his attorney, Bob Woolf,
at 2:48 p.m. and shortly there-
after said he hud

Quarry June 23 at Madison

The announcement of the

hours after Frazier blasted
Dave Zyglewicz in 1:36 of the
opening round to defend his mi-

Angeles boxer.
"I've heard for s long time
that he’s the great white hope.
I'm glad to get this fight.’*
"We’ve got to find out who's
got the harder punch and who’s
got the harder chin," Quarry
said. "Hi* action as a fighter
w ill press me into fighting and,
when someone pushes me into
action, that’s when I fight my

Frazier is considered cham-
pion in six states and two for-
eign countries — Mexic i and
Argentina — while Kllis is
thought of as the titlcholder
everywhere else.
Frazier stands to come out
of his bout with Quarry at
least $250,000 richer, and his
take could soar to $500,00U with
the addition of money from pro-
fits off a closed ci:\ uit televi-
sion network.
Quarry will take in 25
cent of the gate and television
money, but has no guarantee.
"I've been hearing a lot
about Quarry,” the unbeaten
Frazier said after it was an-
nounced he would fight the Los
Tom eenterfielder, displayed
some of his awesome power by
line driving one right over the
left field wall. I was the fourth
time I had seen one hit out of
the new park. Pat Clarke and
Robert Saenz and a gentleman
from McFaddln are the others.
Something I did see yester-
day, though, in practice — the

And the course should attract

And the Astros, behind the
two-hit pitching Larry Dierker,
finally got a win. Dierker said
that the Astros played good
baseball, and that the win
could be the start of things be-
ginning to jibe for the Astros.
They have the potential, he
said. Now let’s see them win
some more.
A young man rushed into
bar and asked the bartender:
"How do you stop hiccups?”
The bartender reached down
quickly and slapped him
across the face with a wet rag.
The guy was furious.
"But you don’t have hiccups
anymore, do you?" asked the
bartender.
“I never did. My girlfriend
out in the car’s got ’em!"

both with
potent left hooks. It was the 20th
knockout for Frazier in 23
fights, while Quarry will go
into the June battle with a 31*2-
4 record.
Quarry has won five straight
fights since he lost to Jimmy
Ellis in the finals of the World
Boxing Association tournament
that crowned Ellis king of his
share of the title.
Quarry's last win was an (/-
set affair in 12 rounds over
Buster Mathis last month.
ncr "I get the least acceptance
, in my hometown than I do any-
place," Quarry said. "I’d be
real happy to win and go back
as my own heavyweight cham-
pion even if I'm not the cham-
pion in my home town. They
never did appreciate me."
California recognizes Ellis as
the world champion, as does
Pennsylvania, Frazier’s home
state.
Frazier plans to rest a month
before going into training near
tlie end of May at Klamesha
Luke, N Y. Quarry also will be-
gin work late in May at Gros-
singer, N.Y.
