Suzanne Biddle Sager shared her collection of the “Old West” which is on display at the
DeWitt County Historical Museum. Contributed photo
Sager displays “Old West” at
DeWitt County Historical Museum
John Wayne, Hop-a-long Cassidy,
Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Tex Ritter,
and Ronald Regan are all names
associated with western entertain-
ment. These folks and others like
them embodied the “western” spirit
of America and communicated a
great deal about our history to the
general public. The silver screen
brought many popular characters
associated with the westward move-
ment in this country to the public in
the 40’s, but the marvel of television
in post war America introduced them
to a much larger population.
Suzanne Biddle Sager has put
together a display of memorabilia,
which illustrates the results of vari-
ous media interpretations of the
westward movement in North
America. She is sharing her collec-
tion with the public in an exhibit at
the De Witt County Historical
Museum.
Sager, a resident of Cuero and
Eagle Pass, acquired some of the
objects in her collection as a child but
added more after she married Alton
Sager, a native of Cuero. He is known
as “Cowboy” among many of his col-
leagues, and the collection fit right
into their household. Sager said, “In
order to capitalize on the popularity
of western themed books and other
media presentations, many compa-
nies produced items related to or
associated with western life. These
items helped shape the image of the
Old West culture. Over the years,
they have become extremely col-
lectible.”
The exhibit illustrates how the
word ’’cowboy” has been broadened
by the media to include a culture
that extends to modem times. From
Seminoles to Shirley Temple to
Snoopy, Sager’s collection contains
dolls, horse miniatures, clothing,
books, photos, posters and more. She
spent many weeks researching and
organizing a lifetime of collecting for
people to enjoy.
The public is invited to view
Sager’s labor of love during museum
hours Tuesday -Friday, from 10 a.m.
until 4 p.m. from now through
February. Located at 312 East
Broadway in Cuero, the museum wel-
comes individuals or group tours.
Admission is free. For more informa-
tion, call Carolyn Pickle at 361-275-
6322 during museum hours.
