WWII vet anticipates trip to

A Mineral Wells resident
was recently selected to take
part in an upcoming expenses-
paid flight to Washington, D.C.
Joe Spears, who served in
the U.S. Army Air Force during
World War II, will fly out of
Dallas/Fort Worth
International Airport next
month for the trip, along with
26 other regional veterans.
The trip is made possible by
Honor Flight Network, a
nationwide program dedicated
to providing free D.C. flights
for aging and ill veterans.
Currently, the organization
is focused on sending World
War II veterans, a group its
website states is shrinking at a
rate of about 900 per day.
Spears' wife, Virginia, said
the couple learned about the
program from staff at a Tarrant
County veteran's medical facil-
ity.
Shortly after Spears
expressed interest in being con-
sidered for a flight, she said
they received a letter informing
them he was chosen to partici-
pate.
"We were quite honored by
that," she said.
"Originally these flights
were made for 50 people," he
said. "On the flight I'm on,
there's 27 veterans and 23
assistants."
Though he is excited about
seeing D.C. for just the second
time in his life, he said the
trip's itinerary is extremely
full.
"We're leaving on the morn-
ing of [Oct.] 16 and getting
back the evening of the 16th,"
he said.
Though he doesn't know
whether he will recognize any
of the other veterans on his
trip, he said a meeting set for
one week prior to the trip will
be "for vets to get acquainted
with each other."
During the sightseeing visit,
he said he looks forward to
viewing the various monu-
ments - especially the National
World War II Memorial.
"The World War II monu-
ment was ignored for years,"
he said, adding he has noticed
an increased interest in the
war's veterans in recent years.

I finally started noticing that
people are starting to talk

In recent years, the first
Saturday in October has
brought great weather to the
mostly outdoor Brazos
Foundation trustees jubilee.
This year the foundation
celebrates it's 17th annual jubi-
lee on Oct. 6, beginning at 5:30
p.m., at the home of Debbie
and Doug Pennington, 901
N.E. 23rd St.
The event helps raise funds
for grants the Brazos
Foundation gives to area orga-
nizations, specifically in Palo
Pinto County.
Over the years, the benevo-
lent Brazos Foundation has
given more than $191,000 to
community projects and orga-
nizations. The jubilee is the
venue to announce the founda-
tion's 2012 awards to area non-
profit organizations.
With a hearty Clay-Ward-
catered dinner of T-bones and
pork chops, along with many
scrumptious side dishes -
including homemade banana
pudding - jubilee goers will be
well fed. Beverages, including
a bar, will help wet jubilee
goer's whistles and embolden
them for auction bidding.
This year's event features
music by rising Mineral Wells
star Morgan Baker, who will
also play at the Crazy Water
Festival in October and has
contributed his craft to many
fundraising events. According
to jubilee chair, Christy
McKamey, there will be lots of
giveaways, a live auction and
donated items.
On the auction block are
hunts from the Guest Ranch, a
vacation get-away, jewelry and
more. Door prizes also include
a vacation get-away, as well as
fitness packages from Palo
Pinto General Hospital, dental
care and much more.
Tickets are $100 per person
and are available at the door or
the law office of Richard Ritchie
by calling (940) 325-6228.
