good thing and if I were still
civilian I would do all I could
to help the U. S. O., for it turns
many an unhappy hour into pleas
ant ones for soldiers.
“Ray, will you send me a book
of blank checks. There are some of
mine in the drawer of your desk.
I’ve run out. This Army is putting
me in the hole.
* ‘ I suppose yoa read of the
new campaign for soldiers to buy
defense bonds. Almost every sol-
dier in Camp Lee has or is signing
up for a bond. I told them I'm
buying one a month but would
sign up for another to make our
company 100 percent. We pay for
the bonds by allowing the govern-
ment to take out so much of our
pay each month, $1.25 for me. I
bought another $25 bond and when
my oil check comes in this month,
go ahead and buy me another
How many do I have nowf It’s
three $50 ones and three $25 ones,
isn’t itT
“Speaking of bonds, I noticed
where several towns fell down on
their quota last month. If soldiers
can serve for just $21 a month and
still buy bonds, it seems to me a
lot of people are lying down on
(the job. It would be a sad thing
to tell the boys in Australia, Oor-
regidor, Hawaii and the other
places.
“It's like the president said:
It's everybody’s war. Those boys
making $25,000 and up need to
realize it too. Now, I know there's
plenty of civilians doing plenty
in this war effort—doing even
more than their share. But there
are some who still think their nor-
mal life should not be disturbed
Everybody’s should I think, until
this war in won. To me.. I don't
care what happens as long as WE
WIN. That's the most importar*
and first job we have to do.
“I guess I got started on ■>
rampage this morning. Maybe it
was the fall of Corregidor that
made me write. I sure hope Wil-
bert Calvert is safe. However, he
is an officer and will probably be
treated fairly decent.
“We are just a few in this
company now. The biggest part
have been shipped off to various
camps over the United States. Out
of the 60 who were in this bar
racks (T 809) only 10 are still
here. I imagine I will be here an
other month, anyway. Maybe long
