Elizabeth, written and illustrated by E. L. Konigsburg, is a
darling, short (117 pages) book about and for children. This is a
Newbery Honor book about the friendship between two small
girls. Jennifer claims to be a witch and knows all about them. For
instance, witches never argue, they convince; witches are never
late.
Mrs. Konigsburg remembers well the loneliness of only children
and the great joy of childhood friendships. In fact, when I
completed the Atheneum offering I wrote to my own slightly
wacky childhood friend who now lives many states away.
“The word laser is an acronym. That is a word made by putting
together the initial letters of other words: L-ight A-mplification by
S-imulated E-mission of R-adiation.
Lasers are being used today by medical researchers for many
things, from attacking cancer cells to erasing tatoos.
The sun emits a tremendous amount of total energy but lasers are
brighter. They put out more energy per square centimeter than
the sun does.”
These and many other facts are contained in the 111-page Franklin
Institute book The Amazing Laaar by Ben Bova. The book is
written so that anyone interested in the subject can understand it.
