We Americans have tra-
ditionally been pretty good sav-
ers, and lately we’ve made some
progress in saving energy. We've
slowed our energy consumption
and actually reduced our imports
of petroleum
But in 1960 wd soil
imported more than 40 percent
of the oil we used in the United
Scares, at a cost of about $70 bil-
lion. We must save more, and
weesn.
Most of our savings so for
have come from driving shower
in more efficient cars. We can
also improve around our homes
by increasing the insulation in
our houses, and by choosing the
most energy-efficient appliances
when we shop for new ones.
American industry is making
appliances more efficient and
labeling large ones with their
energy-efficiency ratings to help
us compare.

tion is important. But it’s not
the whole answer to our cneigy
problems. We need to use more
of our abundant domestic sup-
plies of coal and nuclear fuels to
make electricity. And support
efforts to develop other sources of
energy and make them economi
cally practical.
Conservation is part of
the answer, so... let’s save ci we can.
