OUR STRANGE COUNTRY
Should loyalty to an athlete
be placed above loyalty to ones
country? Some sports enthus-
iasts seem to think so. A
case in point is the glori-
fication of Cassius Clay.
Some sports minded indivi-
duals, including newspaper
and television sports - cas-
ters keep trying to separate
Clay the boxer, from Clay
who by his actions shows he
doesn’t care much for the
United States of America.
Right now some sports en-
thusiasts in Amarillo seem to
feel people are “ridiculous”
because they seriously ob-
jected to flouting Clay in their
face everytime they turn on
TV or look at the sport section
of the paper.
Clay chose not to help defend
his country and the people in
general choose not to honor
him, athlete not withstanding.
Since that is the way it is
that is the way it should be
left.
There is no reason under th'
sun why anyone who loves thi;
country should honor Clay ii
any way.
