Traffic Accident Toll Costs
Americans Billions of Dollars
The economic loss from traffic accidents in September reached
a staggering total of $1,739,522,000, more than $400 million—
or 34 per cent—in excess of that for the same month last
year, the Insurance Information Institute reports.
The September figure was the second largest recorded ever
for any month. It was exceeded only by the $2,015,371,000
estimated for August, which was the worst month in history—
and the first time the economic loss climbed past the $2 billion
level, the Institute pointed out.
While vehicular deaths on the nation’s highways in Septem-
ber dropped slightly—4,830 compared to 4,840 in September
last year—the number of traffic accidents and injuries in-
creased considerably.
A cross section of official state reports on highway accident
experience showed that there were 35 per cent more accidents
and 19 per cent more traffic injuries in September than in
the same month last year.

It Takes A Team
The wild bunch from Howe
did not take on any offenders
the past week but, the team
will travel to Sadler this Fri-
-day to face the S & S Rams.
The Bulldogs are now 2 and 0
in district play and as for now
hold the lead. The team ne-
eds to clench the next games
in order to nail down the dis-
trict title.
In the past weeks we have
tried to show our appreciation
for the loyal backing of the
team by the fans. This week
we would like to express our
thanks to an unheralded group
of 7 body guards; namely the
linemen. Many times they do
not receive the recognition
they deserve even though we
do appreciate them. In case
you don't know them they are
as follows;
Left End... Mike Bledsoe
Left Tackle... Tim Underwooi
od
Left Guard... Lenny Gray
Center.,. Butch Schneider
Right Guard... Butch Thornhil!

Surprise Party Honors
Pep Squad Sponsor
Last Tuesday , NovemDt..
3, the Howe High School pep
squad held a surprise party for
our sponsor, Mrs. Penn. It . ~
was held to honor her for all
the hours of unselfish services
she has given to us, and also
to commemorate her annual
birthday.
The refreshments consisted
of two lovely cakes and some
delicious punch. The pep
squad also presented her with
a charm-inscribed, "To the
Old Lacty. " The refreshments
and gift were purchased with
donations from the pep squad
members and several generous
football players.
The charm naturally raised
some conjecture as to how old
Mrs. Penn actually is. When'
questioned on the subject,
Mrs. Penn informed us that
she was 17. Some people were
a bit sceptical, but you can’t
argue with a teacher.
In all seriousness, Mrs.
Penn is really appreciated r
and loved by all her students
and to tell the truth, she is
closer to being 17 than she is’
to being an old lady!
