Marking the climax of a two-
year contest among the twenty-two
districts of the company, the Unit-
ed Gas Corporation honored the
Winners with a banquet and party
last ^Friday evening at La Quinta
Club nearGregory. On this occas-
ion the TVIcGowen trophy was
awarded the Sinton district as their
permanent property for leading the
other districts the past two years.
Approximaely 150 were in attend-
ance, at the affair.
* The siiyer trophy was won by
^he Sinton District last year on
thp basis of sales and service to
the company's customers. ' This
year the “Sinton District, under Dis-
trict Manager Raymond M. Frank-
rebated its performance of
^distancing competing districts
the United Gas Corporation ter-
tory, and thus earned the right
retain this trophy, permanently.

Twelve new members were initiat-
ed intd the Mu Chapter of the Al-
pha Tau Alpha, national Profession-
al Agricultural Educational Fra-
ternity, at the Texas College of Arts
and Industries Monday, August 23,
swelling the roster of the three
year old chapter to 64 members.
The organisation, the only chap-
n ter in Texas, and sponsored by Tex-
as A. and I., honored two college
officials by electing them to hon-
orary membership. The men were
Sam Fore, Jr., Fjoreavilie, publish-
er and member of the college board
of regents, and L. J. Smith, dean
of men at A. and I.
At the same meeting officers
were elected for the coming year.
John Hagler, A. and I. ex-atudent,
was elected president; W. E. Wil-
liams, Cotulla. 1st vice-president;

Through Stiff Practice

The Sinton Pirates arrived in
their training camp at Seguin Sun-
day afternoon and had their first
Workout Monday, according to In-
formation received here from Coach
O. M. “Red” Moore Wednesday.
According to the routine outlin-
ed at present the squad works out
one and a half hours before break-
fast and with skull practice about
the same length of time during the
morning. In the ’afternoon about
two and one:half hours are devot-
ed to two workout sessions.
Coach Moore stated the boys
looked impressive in their first
practice sessions and if they keep
improving they will be plenty
ready for the first game with Od-
em September 17th.
Three coaches, O. M. “Red”
Mobre, Merle Smith and Roy Wor-
ley are busy putting the boys thru
routine and giving them instruc-
tion fh all the tricks of the game.
Twenty-four boys are in camp,
and include the following with po-
sition in which they play: Backs
—-Bentz, capt., Ferrell, capt., Adams,
Webb, Berry, Whatley, Kunitz and
Hewlett Centers—Newton, Hud-
aon and Pack. Guards—Tribbey,
captain; Mo3s, Tidwell, Gibson and
McNeill. Tackles — McSpedden,
Boyd, Winfrey and Granborry. Ends
—Allen, Turner and Foley.
They will return to Sinton Fri-
day, September 10.

GRASS FIRE
,A grass firS, which threatened
the garage and home of Mf. and
Mrs. Roy Jackson as well as other
homes in that part of town, was
extinguished by the Sin-ton.Fire De-
partment last Saturday afternoon
about three o’clock. The fire ap-
parently’ caught from a discarded
cigarette or match thrown by a
passerby on the highway and qujek-
ly spread over a wide area, setting
fire to yard, fences and endangered
the garage and house. The fire

each grower participating in next
year’s production control program
will be eligible for a mavimum sub-
sidy of 3 cents a pound on 65 ,per
cent of this year’s basic produc-
tion.
The Commodity Credit Corpora-
tion will make 9-cent loans on cot-
ton classing 7-8 inch middling cot-
ton or better; 8 cents on cotton
classing 13-16 Inch staple, and mid-
dling or better in grade; 7g cents
on cotton classing 7-8 inch as to
staple, but undet middling as to
grade.
The purpose is to buoy prices of
cotton. Sagging price* prompted
legislators to demand loan subsid-
ies at the last session of Congress.
A condition ot each loan Is that
the producer-borrower agrees to
participate in the 1988 adjustment
program

The Sinton schools last Friday

Rev. W. F. Pruitt filled the pul-
pit at the Presbyterian church in
Refugio at the morning worship
Sunday and. the Refugio, pastor,
Rev. C. S. Long, occupied the pul-
pit here. In the evening the Rev.
Pruitt went to Robstown, where
he assisted in an ordination and
installation service of the new pas-
tor, Rev. James L. Spencer, rec-
ently called from Choudrant, La.
The charge to the pastor was giv
