Blood, Frets and Tears
Campus Provides
Gift of Life Pints
Donating the “Gift of Life” isn't always easy, but many students say they
feel it is well worth it. The blood drive, sponsored by the Gift of Life Com-
mittee, collected about 700 units of blood from North Texas students during
last week's three-day drive. Wadley Blood Bank of Dallas and Carter Blood
Bank of Fort Worth collected the blood in the concourse of the Coliseum.
Awards will be given this afternoon at 4 p.m. to the dormitory, fraternity,
sorority and organization with the most donations.
Although more than 1,200 students signed up to donate blood, only 700
units were collected, Wes Wyrick, general chairman of the Gift of Life Com-
mittee, said.
Denise Lindley, Denton freshman, (above left) seems slightly squeamish
about her part in the donation process as Barbara Rogers, a blood bank
worker, prepares to take her blood. Test tubes filled with each donor’s blood
(above right) will be tested by the blood bank before the blood will be used.
The first sample of blood is taken from the donor’s finger (above) to be
tested for anemia or infection.
During the drive, members of fraternities, sororities and organizations
were helpful. Bruce Johnson, Beaumont senior, (right) assists Karol
McGrew, Houston junior, as she donates blood.
Pat Fisher, blood bank worker, (left) carries out one of the final steps
in the blood donation process as he packs the sacks of blood in ice to retard
the blood decomposition.
