Airshow:
\ Daredevilish Angels thunder out of the blue to dazzle crowd with famous flying feats
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels, an air
demonstration fleet comprised of five
A-4F Skyhawk aircraft, dazzled a crowd
of about 25,000 last Saturday at the
Denton Airshow.
Within an exhibition of precision spins,
rolls and loops was the team’s diamond
formation, a feat which has become their
trademark. During this stunt, the Blue
Angels fly with their wingtips overlapping
one another, with a mere 36 inches be-
tween them.
The Confederate Air Force added an
element of history to the show with their
World War II vintage aircraft exhibition.
This non-profit, all-volunteer organiza-
tion that specializes in restoring old air-
craft took this opportunity to perform a
chilling reenactment of several events near
to the hearts of all Americans.
A deafening roar of mock explosives
shook the ground as nine simulated Jap-
anese Zeros torpedo planes circled over-
head, reminding spectators of the Decem-
ber 7, 1984 Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor.
Wade Castellanos of the Confederate
Air Force explained that simulated Jap-
anese Zeros are used in the show be-
cause real Zeros are very scarce.
“The planes are actually American
trainer planes cosmetically made to look
like Zeros,” Castellanos said. He added
that the Confederate Air Force is in the
process of restoring an actual Zero that
was built from parts of the wreckage of
several planes found scattered on islands
across the south Pacific.
Castellanos said the purpose of the
Conferate Air Force “is not to glorify
war.
“The C.A.F. is more a history of
aviation. We want to show these planes
in their native element, which is in the
air ”
Following the Pearl Harbor dramati-
zation, there were other simulations of
historic World War II battles, including
the Battle of Midway and the Doolittle
Raid on Tokyo.
An impressive, noisy assemblage of vin-
tage planes was paraded before the audi-
ence including three B-38’s and four
North American 8T6 Texans. Included
in the show was the last flyable B-29,
the same make of aircraft that dropped
atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Naga-
saki.
The U.S. Army Golden Knights, a
parachute demonstration team appeared
at 2 p.m
Jumping out of their C7A Caribou
transport plane, the six members of the
team were at first only visible as tiny
specks. After a few moments, the down-
ward paths of the team members could
be discerned by red plumes of smoke that
spewed from special canisters attached
to the jumpers' boots.
