THE DEMOCRAT-VOICE. COLEMAN. TEXAS
WHAT ABOUT THU RENTER?

NIGHT PHONE 170
To The Democrat-Voice:
Owing to the large and valuable
grain crop and the short and low pric-
ed Cotton for the past two years, the
land owners are sowing to grain and
,the renters are moving The question
naturally arises: What will become
of the renter?
The roads are lined now with men
hunting places for next year. Now
we all know that we have not half as
many people in the county ns wc
need, yet a large exodus is about to
take place.
It moans a great sacrifice to the
renter, he will have to move, sell his
feed at sacrifice prices, move in mid-
winter, his children will be deprived
of school, and in general the renter
that has been a factor in developing
the county will be slaughtered this
winter. The latui owner will not be
benefited, only temporarily, if at all.
We need more men on the farms.
Grain is not a sure crop and the in-
creased acreage will hammer down
the price until grain will be a poor
crop. The prices are now on the de-
cline.
Cotton is the staple crop of the
South. It is the crop we have teen
taught to grow. We know more a-
bout it than any other crop. Every
farm should grow some cotton and it
takes labor to make and gather the
cotton crop. It would he disaster to
the South to grow no cotton. We
have a monopoly on cotton. Farmers
prosper by raising some cotton and
the hurt to the South was not caused
by cotton Inst year, ns it was by not
providing anything but cotton. If we
are to grow twenty thousand haler in
Coleman county next vear we need
the renter.
In the name of mercy the renter
should stay We are in the very midst
0/ a twentieth century Christian civili-
zation. We are taught on every hand,
that ‘‘we are our brother’s keeper."
Yet for the sake of a few dollars we
are to bankrupt the renter, drive his
children and family out in the cold,
and away from school. Shall the Imd
owners of Coleman county be guilty
of such a cold and merciless deed?
In the name of business l appeal
to land owners to rent their land.
Everj- business in the county wants
«nd needs more people. To sow the
county in grain and send the renter
away means a great decrease in our
population. It means bankruptcy of
merchants, depletion of schools and
(hurchas. It means decline in city
property. It means woo and wail to
the poor renter.
Now, Mr. Landowner, your real
duty to those around vou is to sell
your land or rent It. Who is living off
the products of your land? Not
long ago I was passing through t.

their institutes the same week The
teachers of Mason, Concho and Me-
