SQUIRREL CROP HINGES
ON FALL FOOD SUPPLY
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Since
squirrel hunting in many East
Texas areas is more important
than filling for a tooth, Charles
Boyd, biologist, Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department, is constantly
appraising available food supplies
for bushvtails.
The 1985-66 mast crop, espe-
cially the acorns that so necessary
for food, has not been a good one
despite heavy rains in April and
May.
Boyd feels that if the condition
continues until September it might
cause detrimental effects on
young summer squirrels, thus low-
ering fall hunting success.
Hunting on wildlife manage-
ment areas, he says, is expected to
be fair for this year, From such
places the Department gleans
valuable information on several
species of wildlife.
