The story of the continued
growth of Carrollton as indi
Cnted in the story carried last
week, and given this week to
emphasize ths continued
growth of this fine place,
caused quite a ripple of ex-
citement among our people.
Not many had given thought
to the continued growth and
when we euggested "What’s
Your Guess?’’ in last week*
Issue of the Chronicle few
Were prepared for the astonish-
ing news that we had passed
the One Thousand mark in the
town’s population. In 1920 the
census figures showed a pop
tilation of 573; now with the
ton inued growth that is so
evident it can be seen that we
shall forge forward quite a
bit before the time comes for
the 1940 census to be taken.
It is quite evident that we
fuve the people coming to Car
Yollton. Notwithstanding the
fact that many new residences
have been completed and are
-occupied, yet there are no va-
cant houses here and the de-
mand keeps up. In this latest
addition, Leiley Addition,
there are two houses com
pleted, and they are occupied.
Another house was started
last week and three more are
Started in the same addition,
making six residences for this
one addition alone. Up in the
Hofmann Addition there are
two new homes, (Henry Noble
and Roy McCormick) and
another is nearing completion,
(That of J, F. Howell). In
other Part* of town several
new residences have been built
this season; (Dell Smith in the
north portion and Less Har-
mon in the south part). All
of this building ia bound to re-
sult in an increased popula-
tion. All Carrollton is glad to
■ee this growth and trusts it
4ill continue.
We are giving herewith the
story carried last week:
If you ware guessing on the
population of Carrollton at the
preeenfi time what would be
yourguess as to its population ?
You are possibly aware that
In the 1930 census Carrollton
was reported as having 689
people, but that when it was
Investigated it wai found that
00 peraane in one part of the
town were omitted and were
Bat recorded in the census
then taken. Had that 60 been
added to the 689 that were re-
corded the books for 1930
would have shown 749 as the
city’s population at that time.
Well some folks got to dis-
cussing this population ques-
tion some days ago and Uncle
Jimmie Padgett took it upon
himself to take a census him-
self right at this time and see
what we really have in Carroll-
ton. Would you believe it he
found that we had 1001 people
here. Now that is going
aome.
Mr. Padgett found that we
had 253 houses in Carrollton

Had Successful Fair
They had a successful Com-
munity Fair down in Lancaster
just recently and in giving
praise where praise is due, the
editor of the Herald, Ray
Holder, did so nice a job that
we are using the finale ot
his article. Here is what
he said about those who did
the work:
•‘God has given to some
people greater ability than to
others and some of us like the
writer is just lazy. The
Herald would not attempt to
pick out the most valuable per-
son to the fair. There are too
many people who gave to
their utmost for us to risk
hurting one of them who gave
even his mite. Let the Herald
say that it is proud to be in a
town that can do the things
that have been done in orga-
nizing and managing the fair
--and he reported no vacant
ones. He also found three
families with ten members
each. He found that we were
building more houses, also, and
this would indicste thst we
are on the up turn and growing
faster this year than in years
past.
With this stimulus we should
try and forgs ahead faster
in the next year so that when
the government takes its of-
ficial census there will be a
showing of which we will be
really proud- It has been said
over and over again that the
small town is doomed; that it
is steadily losing its position
of importance in the country
and that the steady drift to
the cities will draw away from
the small towns and they will
soon become extinct.
It is our belief that Carroll
ton has a place in the Sun and
that it will continue to grow
and become a really important
integral part of the Dallas
county of the future. Let’s

Home Building
Is Really New*
In a recent issue, the maga-
zine Life published a hand-
some housing portfolio that
should come as "news" to
millions of American families.
The purpose of the portfolio
ia to point out that these fam-
ilies can build and buy far bet-
ter homes than they now reBt
without increasing their hous-
ing budgets, with the aid of
modern construction methods
and long time, low-interest and
mortgage loans.
Life does not simply illus.
trate a variety of homae, with
dry as dust statistics concern-
ing costs Instead it takes
four actual families, one each
in the $2,000, $3,000, $5,000
and $10,000 income groupe,
and discusses their houaing
needs, wants and ambitions.
As it says, it "invited them to
make their individual housing
problems a laboratory test
tube.”
In pursuing this idea, it re-
tained eight of America’s fore-
most architects to design ac-
tual houaes for these families.
Two architects were assigned
to each income level—one to
plan a modern house, the other
an up-to date traditional
house. It is pointed out that
building costs in 1938 averag*
a full ten per cent below 1926
—and that it is possible, for
the same amount, to build a
far more efficient, attractive
and livable home than you
could build ten or twelve year*
ago.
This country need* home
building on a vast scale. It
needs it because so many fam-
ilies today live in inadequate
houses, and can afford better.
It needs it because residential
construction provides a big
answer to the recovery prob-
lem. Every dollar spent for a
home creates one hour of la-
bor for a workman. It stimu-
