277 Park Ave., N.Y., N.Y., 10017
Q* Am I fully covered under
the binding receipt thut 1 got re-
cently when 1 applied for a life
insurance policy?
A. If vou read It carefully, you
will undoubtedly find that It is
not a "binding," but a "con-
ditional" receipt. No insurance
company could reasonably give
you full, unconditional coverage
before its underwriters look over
your application.
But, if your agent believes that
you probably meetthecompanv's
underwriting standards, he is
authorized to accept your first
premium payment and give you
a "conditional" receipt.
The receipt provides that,
under certain conditions, the com-
pany would pay the amount of
insurance you applied for if you
should die before your policy
could be issued. The conditions
vary with different life companies
and in different states.
Many companies would pay
the full amount if the available
facts showed that you were fully
insurable at the time you applied
for the policy.
This is sometimes called "post-
mortem" underwriting. Life com-

BIHDISG
RECEIPT
‘The bigger the bankroll, the
tighter the rubberband.’’
panies often have io do i(, and
they always strive to be scrupu-
lously fair. One large company
recentiy had 32 such instances
during a six-month period, and
made death payments in 23 of
them.
If the facts showed that you
were insurable only at an extra
premium rate (due to impaired
health or a hazardous job), some
companies would pro-rate the
death claim and pay whatever
amount of "rated” insurance you
could have bought with your
initial premium.
With some companies, if your
application involves a medical
examination, your "conditional"
coverage does not start until you
take the examination.
A few companies also provide
a limited amount of "uncondi-
tional" coverage when death is
caused by an accident during the
period that an application is
being underwritten. Regardless of
your insurability, one company
would pay up to $25,000 if you
were killed in an accident during
the first 30 daj/s that your ap-
f otion was being considered.
