Christmas Tide.
The Okristmis days have been
unusually pleasant this year. The
weather for a week previous to
Christmas wag perfect and the
stores with beautifully decorated
show windows were attractive as
conld be to the many shoppers
who were preparing for the Christ-
mas tide.
Christmas day was ushered in
in the old-fashioned way with the
burning of powder and the pop-
ping of lire crackers.
There were a number of Christ-
mas trees in town, at the Method-
ist and Christian churches were
handsome ones and interesting
services. In many homes trees
were arranged for the family and
the immediate relatives. Taking
all in all this Christmas seems to
have been more thoroughly en-
joyed in Jacksboro than for many
years.
Daring the week there have
been dinners and parties without
number which have given life so-
cially, to the town which has been
so full of business the past s‘x
months.

Teachers’ Institute of the
23rd and 24 h.
The Institute was. opened with
prayer by C. W. Horschler.
Prof. Thompson, iu his opening
remarks, stated that owing to the
great responsibilities resting over
teachers, it was necessary f« r
teachers to have a place wheie
they might discuss the methods
which are best and which would
secure the greatest gdod.
The prevailing idea, in regard
to “How to secure good atteud
ance at sohool,” seems to be to
secure the interest of the pupils,
and create iu them a desire to at-
tend. Also to educate parents to
the importance of having their
children regular in Ittendance.
Mr. Horschler remarked that
scolding does not result in good
discipline. That kindness is a
greater power than force, in gov-
ernment.
In order to inspire a child to
self-improvement, it was conceded
that a knowledge of child-nature
was essential. That we must
know and understand spiritual
force before we can properly
arouse it to the desired action.
Bedding iu intermediate grades
was briefly discussed.
At night the most importan*
subjects discussed were Child
study and Up-to-dte g eography.
It is remarkable how many mis-
takes are found In our new gram-
mar school geography, of which
will write more later.

Is also without an equal for colds and whoop-
Texas heretofore. Tie cattlem jn
themselves where feed crops of
any k!nd can be raised, are giving
more attention to their cultiva-

quantity of feeding material that
comes from the cotton fields the
Texts farmers are producing vast
and increasing quantities of grain
and forage crops which can be
disposed of most advantageously
by feeding tli >m oqt to live stock.
The teqdenoy of all these things
is to make Texas an important
cattle feeding as well as cattle
raising state, and this evolution
of the cattle industry will inure
ta the benefit of all concerned
and will do much to advauoe the
prosperity of other interests. Al-
