been in their family for 92
years. Tall shade trees, green
valleys and rolling hills provid-
ed a picturesque setting. Roas-
ted chicken, roasted corn in the
shuck and a whole roasted pig
was part of the menu treat for
some 100 of the World War II
veterans who were present.
They came from all sections of
the nation.
At full strength, Co. “B"
consisted of 175 men. However,
during the war more than 800
men served in the unit, repre-
senting personnel being replac-
ed four and one-half times.
During the war the men earned
over 1,200 decorations, includ-
ing Distinguished Service
Cross, Silver Star and Purple
Heart. The unit received a
Presidential Citation and four
of the company’s enlisted men
received battlefield commiss-
ions because of their leadership
exhibited during combat.
Among the first of these was
Hiram F. Fenton, a sergeant at
the time. His promotion was
presented by Lt. Col. G. E.
Lynch. The retired Major Gen-
eral was a special guest at the
Muncie meeting to again be-
stow honor on Fenton, as he
presented the post-war award.
Publicity for the reunion
included coverage by the Mun-
cie Star, the Indianapolis Star
and the CBS and ABC televis-
ion networks. Reporters inter-
viewed the Texas group, and
Dorothy Musick told of having
lost two brothers in the war,
Garland and Earl Smith of
Coleman.
At the Muncie reunion Fen-
ton was elected president of the
eastern group, having already
been elected president of the
western group when they met
in Coleman in June of this year.
He will preside at the joint
meeting for the two groups at a
big reunion in Houston Labor
Day weekend in 1982. This will
be combined with the 36th
Division reunion already sched-
uled to be held in the Astro-
dome area.
